Hi. I recently just got back into photography, and I am going to start using this site again. I took a bunch of pictures this past week. Please be brutally honest and tell me what you think.

Here is my VERY humble opinion -- you have a great eye for texture, abstract composition and seeing the detail of the mundane. A couple of them lack a strong central interest, but overall, show a lot of promise. I wish I weren't on the way out the door and could give you a better critique one-by-one. I will come back later!!

these are my opinons and personal preference
Sand - this is nice, it would be better if all the sand was in focus, instead of just the front.
Alex - this one is my favorite, it is awesome, except for Alex. it would be good for your wall or photo album if you have a personal connection with the subject, but the picture in itself it amazing. with the children playing in the distance it is beautiful. i would cut everyone out but the kids
clear view - pretty
hand - out of focus
blinds - doesnt really hold my interest
apple computers- doesnt really hold my interest, but nice colors

Most of them seem to be abstract which is ok. But they lack something within the frame that can hold attention, except Alex. The sand one is pretty and the blue water adds some interest but not enough to make me want to study it for more than a few seconds.
Of them all, I like blinds the best. I can feel the weight of the rod and the shadow shows the shape of the blinds in the background. But technically, it isn't very strong. It looks, to me, like it wasn't in focus and most of the texture is missing. But then again, I'm almost blind.
Hope to see much more in the future. |

Interesting how different people's perception is...
Here's my take:
Sand: lacking something in the foreground to serve as the center of composition. Should be all in focus and should have a lot more contrast and saturation.
Alex: i mostly agree with riotspyne, except i would keep alex in the picture, but make sure he doesn't pose. Also he needs to be all in this
kind of a photo, imo, not just a half of him.
Clear view: needs a polarizer, otherwise just like with sand, needs something to make the picture. Unless your goal is to shoot a texture stock.
Hand: awesome as it is, wouldn't change a single thing.
Blinds: doesn't click... I hate the dark shadow and it needs to be all in sharp focus or at least as much as possible with this kind of macro. May be a good idea, but implementation is very poor.
Apple: i would just throw it away, there is nothing in it imo.
All my personal opinions, take them or leave them. HTH.

Welcome back, Spencer, and thanks for posting your pictures. I agree that you have a good eye for texture and composition. I wanted to add that your outdoor shots seem overexposed. You might want to adjust your white balance, ISO, aperture or shutter time to deepen those colors and control the white areas better. A polarizing filter at the beach is really useful as well. Good luck!

Looking at the camera you have - the shoots just are too plain - the camera is capable of so much more
you must remember its not the camera that makes the picture it the photographer
as kylie said you have a great eye for texture, abstract composition and seeing the detail of the mundane but you need to apply your eye and imagination in a more interesting and better composed way
I would suggest trying to learn more about your camera and settings to achieve a much more vibrant result, the colours/pictures seems plain and arn't very interesting
I would suggest to take everyone oppinion on board and combine them the best way you can. I guaratee that your pictures will impove ten fold if you do this
Funny. All of my friends like the picture of the Apple mouse the best. But thanks you shouldn't ignore people opinions, cause the main reason you displayed your picture is to get advice and help, in which you should keep an open mind about
Ok that said - I maybe being brutally honest but I think thats what you asked for, so thats what you got :p
