Sure - A B&W and color is ok to upload..

Jon, you guys are amazing! I sent an email earlier today and you personally replied within a matter of minutes. I also tried to FTP my photos and it worked very nicely and I didn't have to wait 15 min to add the keywords etc. The approval process was also very expedited. Kudos to shutterstock!

I was browsing the most popular downloads page when I saw the most frequently searched keywords and #2 is water. Is there a way for me to add keywords to photos currently up on the shutterstock site?

No. What's been suggested is to delete the current file and upload it again with the extended list of keywords. Do remember only to use a keyword if it's relevant to the image. Spamming the keywords just gives the site a bad name and doesn't do anyone any good.

Yup, I read about the "spamdexing" and have no plans to follow that. I want to add keywords that are relevant to my photo. If you look at the #1 (was #2 last night) most downloaded photo //www.shutterstock.com/pic.mhtml?&id=5123 (it has clouds in the sky) it's fairly liberal with keywords like aviation, flight and flying. I can sort of understand spiritual and some others but I feel that one qualifies as spamdexing with the aviation keywords. Just my opinion. As for the photo I want to edit, it's of an ocean scene and it does have water in it. :)
I would like to make this an official site suggestion to Jon: please enable us to add keywords to accepted and posted photos that are already uploaded. I guess we could type in the comments section for the reviewer that we are just reuploading with new keyword(s). I suppose that will work for those with high speed Internet connections but for those on dial-up, that's got to be painful.

Finally! I got one...
...I've also got a "reference", but no downloads for that yet. So I'm at 20 cents. |

I couldn't resist. I had to check for the umpteenth time and low and behold, 2 downloads. 40 cents richer, on paper anyway.

Oooo, you're ahead of me on referral points. But I'm getting my brother to sign up, so maybe I can make up ground in November.
What kind of pictures do you mostly have up there? My latest download was of some Brussels Sprouts! : )
Of the ones I have there, I think that one would have headed my "least likely to be downloaded" list ....

I've been shooting and uploading all weekend. Have 30 something up now but no buys yet. I did make $55 at istock this month. That's a record for me.
Mel, do you do different things for each site? I use my sigma for istock, but have started using my dimage for shutterstock and dreamstime. How do you keep up with which photos are where? Or are all of your pictures at all the sites?
Seems to me that it would be hard to prove someone is not abiding by the download agreement if every site has your picture for sale. You know, in case you want to get a site to send out a cease & desist letter. |

Pat, what's your username on istockphoto? Or could you post a link to your portfolio?
$55 in a month is impressive! I'd like to learn a few things from you...

Just keep uploading till you get a great big fat portfolio. And do like Paul did (which I wasn't smart enough to do). Look at the most popular files. See what is being bought and put your own spin on it. |

Good suggestion. I made the same one to Jon. I hope they listen. Jon and his people make up a fairly small company compared to Photos.com and Comstock.com (both owned by JupiterImages.com). Smaller companies are usually more responsive.

My husband (he's a consultant for an online ink jet printing supply company) recently wrote a history on stock photography (covering the last decade), that I think members of this forum would find interesting. It also compares istockphoto, Dreamstime, CanStockPhoto and ShutterStock:

I made $100.50 from Istock in Sept and $106.00 in October...
I put the same photos up on Istock and Dreamstime, but some get rejected and some don't so I have some different one both....bigstock is just a few I had left over...canstock are my istock rejects...and I am now uploading all my files to shutterstock.....
I have just two many stock site to keep up....I might not upload any more to bigstock or canstock for a while.
and I keep track of it all with folders
example: (folders)
(Istock)
>To GO
>Pending
>Rejected
>Uploaded
and I only have one copy of the file in the folder....the file is in the (To Go) folder first when I upload it, I move it into the pending folder and then move it into the Rejected or uploaded folder.
I hope this helps

I know what you mean! Sounds like you have a good system, though. Stock is a numbers game. Each agency attracts their own clientele. If the contract is not exclusive (and should not be under the R-F model), then the photographer should try to maximize his/her sales by selling the same images via as many distribution channels as possible.
