I'm thinking of doing some sports photography and wondering what people use for camera support.

I have a couple of velbon monopods that I got through subscription offers, that don't have a head on them - is it worth getting a head to fit one of these, or should I just get a real monopod ? The thread is the size of a camera tripod thread, rather than that for a head I think. What sort of head would you recommend ?

Also - I'm using a 70-200 lens - would I be better off with a tripod collar for balance, or should it be okay straight on the body ?
Any thoughts/ experience ?

I think adding a tripod collar for balance is up to how long you plan on taking the photos. If we're talking a baseball game or another long sporting event than I might invest in one. I have a 100-300 lens and it can get quite tiring holding for just a few minutes. This is just personal advice as I wouldn't consider myself a highly experienced sports photographer. I usually go hand-held for my shots as I have only shot local sports and can get close enough where I don't need to use my zoom to much. I suppose a monopod is better than nothing, couldn't tell you what head to use.

I have used a monopod at racing events in the past with my Canon film gear and 300mm lens. The majority of folks (and myself) did not have a head on the monopod. But this is completely up to you.

When shooting sports events, you are usually at the "level" you need to be, so with the monopod extended up/down/whatever, you have the lens at the right level to capture the action. The head would merely provide you the ability to keep the monopod on the ground, sort of vertical and tilt the camera up or down.

If you think you need this, then I would check the heads, as most monopods I have seen do indeed have the thread size of the camera, and not the tripods. If you need to use a head on a monopod, I would say the best one to get is a ballhead with one knob. You do not need a seperate pan or tilt lever (or any lever sticking out for that matter). One quick knob turn, get the angle right, lock and shoot.

Hope this helps...
