There are many ways to create a border in Photoshop. You could scale your image down below 640pixels, then increase the canvas size back to 640 to make a solid border with your background color.
You could make a rectangular selection within your image, then choose Select>Modify>Border with a setting of one or two pixels. Fill that selection with a color (or delete it get the background color) and you'll have a nice inline border.
Select a rectangular area within your image and choose Select>Inverse to highlight the outside area. Now you could desaturate that area, ghost it back by making it partially transparent, or fill it with a solid or translucent color. If you feather the selection before choosing Inverse, you can delete the outside area to get a soft vignette (hit delete repeatedly to soften more of the image).
You could copy your entire image, then "Paste Into" an irregular selection to get a shaped or rough-edged border. The list goes on... |

It doesn't always hurt to have a border.
I used one for this:
Created by making a rectangular selection then Edit > Stroke in PS Elements.
(At least I don't think it hurt.) |

i agree with this, but not for all cases... sometimes a border can look good.
eg (not my pics)

KaDi it doesn't hurt if the boarder complements the picture in the case of the clip shot there i think it could've bin better exicuted (ie.-the fabric that is hung pass through the white stripe (or boarder). i think that makes it just alittle distracting
An exaple to me of a complementory boarder is such as can be viewed around the edge of the open challenge winner's pic. for parts No Strings Attached
also i've seen these boarders that look like matting how are those done (do you just take and drag 2 rectangles or is there a trick)

The easiest way to do this is to crop the photo slightly smaller than the final size, and then enlarge the Canvas -- the Background color becomes the border. Repeat with different colors as desired. |

If you create a border, I would suggest making it at least 8-10 pixels wide so that people won't miss it.
Okay, I'm kidding. |

My latest edition of OP had an article on adding borders. I guess if a well known photograper says it's ok to add a border, that's good enough for me. Not that your opinion doesn't count or anything. ;o
In psp there is an option under "image" that's just for adding borders. Works great. |

I've seen a lot of crappy photography (and photoshop) magazines, you must've bought one of them.

I'd be interested in seeing a "real" photography magazine that says that "real" photographers never put a border on their photos. Got any links or article suggestions? |

Sometimes good, sometimes not.
If they are soooo bad, how is it the top 3 in the Master's Challenge had them. Actually look how many in the top 10 had them.
Done right, it can accent a shot.

That was a smartass question. I do subscribe to a variety of photo magazines. It's just that that particular one just had an article in it about borders. Thanks for the suggestions though. |

Do you, perchance, have a citation?
I looked at their online version and wasn't able to find the article you are remembering. (yeah, I know not everything is online...just hopeful) |

Adding an edge to your prints. Ok. So they don't call it a border. A border by any other name is still a border. |

Thank you.
The article doesn't appear to be full text online, but I'm sure I can find it now.
On the issue of borders...they do seem to get in the way of the photograph when they're heavy-handed. The reason I used one in my clothes pin picture was that I wanted to "contain" it....the subject didn't have it's own beginning and end from left to right, so I thought I'd throw something around it to keep it from spilling out. |

It's ironical that you use quotations for'real' when I never use the word. I was attempting to be whimsical.
I bet you never liked Seinfeld either. 'Tis a pity when humor is overlooked. |

When you are offending people more than humoring them then there is certainly an issue with the way the joke is presented. |

A concept which is lost on one may be obvious to another. Like, oh I dunno, basic math or counting to 10.
(ooooooo good burn on my part, if I weren't so dang humble I'd almost be impressed) BAH!
P.S. I still don't like borders, personally, not even on Ansel Adams' prints so bring on the mob!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
