You can always tell when a discussion is getting to the interesting parts when people bother to correct spelling instead of the points they raised that were dumb. So if you think it is a photoshop filter orgy, why not show some examples.

And popular opinion does mean everything on here, for the ones that win - that's because the populace gets to vote on it. What do you think people vote on, your idea of artistic merit ? The popular pictures win, same as they did when the site started. You picked a couple of example pictures that you like. That's your opinion of a picture that is 'popular' for your taste.

But rant away, - I'm sure it is theraputic, no matter how much you miss the point
