Above was my 'Wacky Foods' entry and I got puh-lenty of flack for the background. The background is real and was effective in my mind, not so in other's minds. What I was wondering was what type of background would have better served the photo? Was that the only reason it was voted down or were there other concerns (lots of people talked in the threads about voting things down for being something they wouldn't eat or that they found disgusting)? How else could I have improved this photo?

I am sorry to ask for your time...I tried the CC route, but to no avail. So, any suggestions?

Thanks...

I thnik there are 2 issues with this background:

#1: it is somewhat overly luminous to the point where it eqautes the subject on luminosity...perhaps even more luminous (see reason #2).

#2: green is a very bizzare color, I work as a LD...and of all the colors, green is the most delicate one. Green is the color we see most with our eyes... basically, a light emission in green requires 50% less brightness than red or blue to be perceived to be as bright... also, green is a fairly aggressive colors for those with light to heavy astigmatism.

In the end, I think if it had been much darker it would have worked.

I've found that you can please very few people here... Everyones a critiqe. I like the green background. It reminds me of some sci-fi, godzilla type movie! If you like it don't worry about it!

Greetings,
Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents worth, (and lately, judginig by challenge scores, it aint even worth that much) but the topic of a bug didnt bother me, but I couldnt tell what type it was, as in was it a candy bug, a plastic bug simulating a candy bug, a real bug with focus issues or something else entirely, and that bugged me (sorry, couldnt help myself), the green while slightly overpowering I wouldnt have knocked off more than a point for, but the confusion, well that's another story. Hope this helps,
Mike

I didn't vote on your image but the background is indeed a little overwhelming. Bugs, chocolate covered or otherwise, aren't particularly unusual as a food. It's not a particularly bad photo but it is only what it is. Comparing it to the winning photo you'll see that the winner also didn't use a particularly unusual food but placed it in an interesting setting with a high level of detail. A little more depth to your image would go a long way.

Actually, it's a praying mantis, it is real, and it is covered in Nestlé syrup, not Hersheys.

Anyway, thanks for the comments. This will give me something to think about for the future challenges.
