I am curious, did people see this as not meeting the challenge, or did they just not like it. I realized after the challenge started that I posted the uncropped version (The small white spot on the right by the railing.) so I expected some trouble there. No one mentioned it. Anyone have any comments or ideas? If you think this didn't meet the challenge, I would also be curious to know how you think this would have done in framing.

From a technical standpoint, I see these flaws: contrast, lighting and cropping. Contrast and lighting are flawed in a similar way. The low light levels affects the overall contrast of this image. Like you mentioned yourself, it needs to be cropped to get rid of that white spot.

Aesthetically, it just doesn't pack a visual punch. I see the railing, the water, bits of the roof and the sunset but there isn't a main focal point that grabs my attention.

Hope that helps! By the way, I did not vote in this challenge.

Well, I think it's because there doesn't seem to be a part of something as the focus. It's a beautiful sunset, but it just doesn't say part to me. Cropping out the lamp and leaving just the rail would have made it jump out and say "Parts!" Even getting down on the floor and taking a shot of the railing with the sunset shining through would have been good. All in all it just did jump up and bite the voters in the tush as being a "Part."
As for framing, a lot of photos in that challenge got bashed for not having a complete frame.I believe there was even a thread discussing how the winner shouldn't have won because of this. Retitling the photo to stress that the sunset is the focus and not the porch itself would help it... possibly... for framing. I probably would have given it a 7 in the framing challenge.

That's exactly what I was going to say...I would guess the lack of WOW and the lack of one MAIN focal point is what might have hurt the rating. It's not a bad photo, it just needs a bit more "umph." :o)

Hi Darlene,

Here is my take on it.
While there are some technical issues with it such as sharpness & noise (these can be overlooked in a challenge though due to compression issues), the horizon is not quite level (some members will have fits with that) and there is in a way, too much going on in this shot, as the roof line/eaves keep yanking my eyes away from the light & landscape.

A minor CCW rotation and crop may have helped this, similar to what I did here:

Of course this is only my opinion, but that is what I would have done had it been mine.

I gave it a 5.

I didn't think it was a spectacular sunset. It's a pretty color, but there are no clouds or anything to add some interest to it, and I didn't think the crop of the porch was interesting.

I did not mark it down for not meeting the challenge well - who am I to say - but I think that may have happened.

Don't feel bad. I really liked my entry in the communications challenge and it's limping along at 4.2!!
