if this is a 24 hour speed challenge then why are we being given any details now and told to "get idea's cranking?" is the purpose of a speed challenge to spring the requirements on everyone and then give you 24 hours to come up with and photograph your idea? now with this challenge, we have all week to think about it... the only part of the speed is shooting it... I can take 100 shots in very little time... the hard part is ideas and we have all week for that... not much of a speed challenge if you ask me... anyone else feel that way?

I think they're trying to "ease us in" to this new type of challenge. Also, there may be some question of whether the email notification system is set up (or fair -- some folks don't check their email round-the-clock). When the date's a holiday, it's useless to keep the theme a "secret." Or...they may check the forums for all the stuff we talk about and then pick something unrelated, like ...

I disagree with this in several particulars.

First, We have been told ONLY that there will be a speed challenge on the 14th. The topic has not been set, but will probably be reasonably obvious given the day. However, it COULD be anything and therefore the advance notice is not a problem for the speed challenge.

Second, the normal challenges allow you to take a shot at any time it becomes available during that week. Not so here, where it must be taken on a particular day. Again, a distinct difference to normal challenges.

Third, and finally, if there is no advance notice, then only those members looking at the site on Friday would know about it and therefore be able to enter. This advance notice allows those who do NOT visit every day, to plan to visit on Friday to get the details.

Terry, we should enter the Crappy Art challenge at worth1000.com. Go ahead, be negative.

acctually Jak if you will go and read the message you will find my problem is not that they are giving notice of the challenge, but that they are telling us what the theme will be about... you said they did not do this, however when I read the update message it says, "The theme will be related to Valentine's Day. So get those ideas crankin', because the shot MUST be taken on the 14th." now we have all week to think of ideas... :o) so much for the speed of the challenge

That's OK for this challenge. I stand by my position for future speed challenges.

I think giving 24 hours notice for a 48-hour challenge, and 48 hours notice for a 24-hour challenge would be a good compromise. Or, if it's always scheduled for the same time (say the second Friday), then the topic could be withheld until zero-hour. But I like the first of these methods a lot better...

Like I said, they (D&L) are still working on this system, as well as trying to finish other parts of the site -- I think the speed challenge most folks are interested in is how fast can they code the print galleries...

that kind of notice is fine.. heck even a weeks notice is ok... just so long as nothing pertaining to the theme or topic is mentioned before the challenge begins.. a weeks notice would give everyone plenty of chance to be aware that they need to check on a certain day to see what the topic is...

Since this is on the site news for everyone, does that mean it's an open challenge. The New Years one was just for members, right?

Is it possible to take out the battery, re-insert after a few seconds/minute and set the date? I read this somewhere in the manual.
Then the next few days can be Valentines' Day.

that won't matter as long as the theme or topic is not divulged until the last minute... oh the conspiracy!

If this is an open challenge, isn't the deadline for submission sopposed to be shorter, like one day? In that case, what about those staying overseas, like myself a situated in a location 13 hours AHEAD !!! HALF OF VD IS GONE !!!

Yes you will not know the challenge for half of valentines day... but on the other hand you will have 13 hours of the next day, which is a weekend, to shoot as well!

limkinlok, that goes against the rules of fair play, if you wish to do so, let your heart live with it.

From some of the posts here, I assume I'm not the only guy that got dumped hard on a Valentine's Day? My dump was 8 years ago and a fading memory, but it begs the questions, "How many guys have been dumped on Valentine's Day?"... and "Why do you suppose women choose that particular day to dump guys?"

Also, is it a coincidence that Valentine's Day is often shortened to VD? I think not...

You will have 24 hours to submit, and if you are in a time zone east of EST, part of those 24 hours will be on Saturday. Likewise, if you are west of EST, part of your 24 hours will be on Thursday evening.

The rules are in place to assure an equal opportunity for everyone. Violations of those rules will result in disqualification. If the site administrators believe the violation was intentional, you may be suspended as well.
