Since I don't have a hope in getting a ribbon either way I'm not responding from a personal perspective but... I can't see any harm in recognising two additional high ranking images and, as has been said, possibly boosting sales of said images.

I do miss the days when some things were decided by a poll of users rather than always decided only by SC. I love our SC but polls to gauge member feelings (in a broader sense than a forum thread) can't be a bad in cases like this, can they?

I know it's weird to quote myself but...

When I say "love"... I don't mean in the squishy, moist sense.

Apart from one or two of them.

Wure, why not! Site Council doesn't have enough work to do! ;-)

I want squishy, but not moist, please.

I like the idea of multiple ribbons, but there's a design issue. Depending on your screen resolution there is not enough space for 5 ribbon holders.

Keep in mind that not all of us have large monitors. :)

hehehm, nope, some of them might still have time to take photographs.

I'd like to see two additional ribbons but still keep just the top three on the front page. Even with a large monitor, I think the front page would start to get a cluttered feeling with additional photos.

I agree with that.

I think its a great idea.

How about keeping it the way it is, and having some kind of symbol attached to the top 10% in each persons portfolio. You may not have to worry about validating the ones with the 10% "sign".

The more prizes you give out, the lesser the sense of achievement in winning one. I would be against this idea.

If you finish top ten, you already get extra hits on your shot through the first page of the challenge results anyway - in my experience, around 600 for a top ten, 2/3/4 thousand for a ribbon, and anthing from 50 to 0 for lower placings.

I tend to agree with e301.

Yep, it's not totally about ribbons. If your image ends up on the first page on a selection, it gets a lot of attention. Not that I have experienced enough to come to a conlusion, but just from observations.

I think that's true to an extent and there's definitely a point to not overdoing it... but the increase in the average number of entries per challenge means top 5 now is as meaningful as top 3 in earlier days.

I'd certainly agree that going further than top 5 would be overkill...

I agree, without taking a mathmatical look at it, I believe that not only are there more entries but far more high quality entries that are more than worthy of a ribbon be it Blue, Red, Yellow, Green or Purple. I know that the old adage about 20% of the people doing 80% of the work holds true, Terry but if you only had two more shots per challenge to validate, that shouldn't be too bad. I think this is an idea who's time has come.

I think its a good idea. Makes sens considering the number of applications compared to a year ago (i wasn't a member then).

My comment was purely tongue-in-cheek... note the ;-) at the end.

I do too.

Try doing some research on the phenomenon known as "grade creep"

Then why would anyone want to come in the top 3?
