well, I just pulled the trigger on a new lens - I got a sigma 70-300 dg APO (with macro from the 200-300 range as an option at 1:2) for half price (brand new) with a monopod, 3-compartment bag and uv filter. (I currently have an old Nikon 70-300 (beige one) that has a pretty soft focus overall)
I'd looked at the non-apo version which was even cheaper about a week ago, and had decided to save for better optics in the $400-500 range, then I saw Henry's (Canadian camera store chain) had a 1-day sale with 15 of these kits available web-only. I tried to add a few extra to my cart to check on how many were available, only 1 more was available after my purchase (when I went to 3 it said 2 left) for Nikon mounts.
it sucks it won't be here in time to be of use for my team in DPL, but I'm sure it will help me overall to have a lens that has some macro functionality and is a better overall lens than my current 300mm for the photography I do here and for my personal projects.
as much as I'd love to have some 2.8's (105mm or ideally the 200 nikkor brand macro and 70-200 telephoto), the cost for a "hobbyist" like myself is too hard to justify.

anyways, I know my wife won't get the excitement of "new glass" and I wanted to share my joy with people who would :)

I'm so happy about your new glass!

I can't wait to see how you play with it!

Grats on the new glass, I like my Siggys too. Just watch for chromatic aberration; that's my only very minor beef with them, and that can be easily fixed in pp. Have fun with it!

Was emailed today by Henry's rep and told my order was cancelled because it was accepted in the system "moments after another order".
Called and talked to a rep at the given #, was told they don't have the hardware (lens) to fill the order but could get another lens at cost. That doesn't help if i can't afford the base cost pf the equivalent lens...
asked if she was sure they didnt have this lens anywhere, she said they have one in a store, open, but not part of offered package. Ask what sort of deal she could do on this, so since it is already open and used to demo instore, and issue with order, she offers 66% discount of new price on it.
Sold! I will take it! It's actually $100 cheaper than buying it in a kit with a uv filter and monopod, and a small case i dont need!
Let's hope they actually have it and it isnt a system placeholder value. I will be hoping for a better price than "cost" next time around.
