"We often remember someone for the little things about them or their personality, or what makes them who they are. Take a picture of a person's defining feature. Find someone, find what defines them, take a picture of it."
Wow... I'm really glad the author of this description cleared up the intent of this challenge. |

I imagine that people with unusual piercings and tatoos will also be popular. Or people that can do weird things with their bodies, like double jointedness or that woman that John Setzler photographed that hung on a hook connected to her skin (hope I didn't give your idea away, John). I wonder where I can find that kid I knew when I was in grade school who was able to turn his eyelids inside out? |

This is the key to my post. What people "do" is a defining characteristic also, but it is not mentioned... If you are not photographing a physical 'defining feature', it's probably hopeless... Relaying a personality trait in a photograph is quite complex. It's hit and miss at best, and the chances of someone seeing what you are trying to show will be difficult. Luckily, this challenge encourages the photographer to describe what is being shown in the photo rather than letting the voter guess :)
IMO, the photograph of the girl hanging from hooks in her skin would not meet the guidelines of this challenge. |

I never really understood what it means to show character in a portrait or how to comprehend a psychological/emotional trait of a person in a portrait unless it's some obvious action, such as sobbing. This really brings into the fore the issue of communication with an audience.
I"m not sure why you don't think the girl hanging by hooks would not be a good subject as the images of her hanging certainly brought to my mind her psychological state to do something as unusual (to say the least :) as that.
I think that in this challenge, and for portrait photographers in general, it's important to bear in mind the universal expressions of character and psychological states and apply them to the image you are trying to create. This way, it's more likely that your audience will identify with the features you are trying to convey. Acting, and the use of facial expressions may also be important by the subject.
I think that this challenge will also require a clear idea of what is to be expressed before the shoot begins. That may require a joint venture and discussion with the subject beforehand. |

A quick search shows that we can thank Gordon for this challenge. |

His description is a lot more 'defined' that what actually made the challenge... That seems to work well :) |

It seems to me this is saying take a picture of a smoker smoking, a talker talking, a builder building, a painter painting, etc., someone doing something that defines who they are. |

Well, defining FEATURE makes me think it's the red of the redhead, the blue of the blue eyes, the mom tattoo on the biker dude, etc. Not the smoker smoking, which would be more a defining BEHAVIOR.
But I've noticed since coming here that everyone interprets a challenge differently, and that's what I dig.
Dig?
Dig.

"We often remember someone for the little things about them or their personality..."
By personality I take this to mean portrayal of a feature of it, so for example if that person is thoughtful, get them to sit in a thoughtful position. If he/she is happy then take a picture of them laughing! And so on and so on and so on! Take this example from my holiday this year with my friends - this is Dan and he is very outgoing and positive thinking:

(On a technical note the background is waaay too cluttered but it was a holiday snapshot!)
