I grew up in nova scotia; if it's not "deep fried chicken" it's "deep fried potatoes" or "deep fried turkey" or "deep fried...." well, anything. Nova Scotia's signature dish is deep frying normal things.
Deep fried candy bars? Yup.
Deep fried hot dogs? Sure.
Deep fried ice cream? Yup, they've got it.

love deep fried ice cream... that candy sounds really gross ewwwwwweeeeee

yeah...and if it's not deep fried, it's boiled, or baked-to-sh!t overdone in a lot of places.
one of the "go to" meals growing up was "boiled dinner" - corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, turnip, carrots, peas, and a few other random vegetables (based on who is cooking) all cooked together in a big pot until you can't tell one taste from another, and then instead of draining the water, they put it in a gravy boat to pour over their meals again. ugh. couldn't stand it then, and the thought of it turns my stomach now.

hooray though, I live in Ontario now, where people are normal! :)

Believe me, I like Canada as much as the next person, many fond memories in Toronto and Montreal.

But none of the food mentioned sounds the least bit photogenic. Poutine, if done right, tastes like heaven, but looks like vomit.

I'm not "poutine" that in my picture!

Here is what I think you have to do(for the Americans out there)-

Take an American shot but avoid typical American sterotypes, or anything that might be seen in a country music video,
and then, make the shot more polite, slightly more British, and/or hockey themed.

Or take a picture of Nickelback, the hotel du chateau frontenac quebec, or any of the actors from the Trailer Park Boys.

yeah, I'd avoid food, unless you're taking a picture of a lobster or maple syrup.

Sounds like a good combo.

Seeing as I just moved to Canada this month, I feel like this should be a mandatory challenge for me. Ugh... hmmm.

How Canada is perceived around the world

Yup. More trivia!
******************

My PERSONAL favorite "fun fact" is that Canada consumes more Macaroni and Cheese (or as we call it here Kraft Dinner, or KD) than anywhere else, up to 55% more than Americans.
of 7 Million boxes sold weekly World-Wide, Canada purchases 1.7 million. Yup - we love our cheesy pasta.

My least favorite fact I saw in these pages is "The first Canadian casualties of the Afghanistan war were from an American pilot bombing a training exercise"

I'm going to take a picture of a canoe with outriggers ;-)

This explains a lot :-)

"Large parts of Canada have less gravity than the rest of Earth. The phenomenon was discovered in the 1960s."

Sad about the Afghanistan war fact, but in reality, for all the criticism from the North, nothing has kept Canada more safe and saved more Canadian lives, than having the belicose USA as a big neighbor.

So happy Canada day!

You do know that Canada was only invaded by one country right... any idea as to which country it was.

As much as I love our neighbours to the south, what you are advancing here is but mere speculation. Rather difficult to gauge something that never happened.

Happy 4th in a few days.

Ray

thank you Ray. truly we have more to concern ourselves about in Canada than wafer thin hypothetical threats to our sovereignty from outside North America. some Canadians seem to want to give this country away - its water, its resources, its peacableness, its responsibility to ALL its citizens, its respect for privacy, its resistance to fear mongering.

yeah. happy fourth, you guys. every now and then you get it right too.

Honestly not aimed at anyone in particular because I love you all, but could we keep the pokes and jabs to the Trash Talk Thread (where they don't seem to be all that popular, either) and celebrate WITH one another?

As I hit post, i knew it would spark you up Ray, but Happy Canada Day nonetheless, and on the 4th we will certainly think well of our Canadian friends, despite being on the wrong side of the revolution, if there even was a Canada then!
Cheers!

Eta-Sorry Nikki, but this goes deep into why there even is this challenge. I am not a flag waiving 'mercan, but sometimes the negativity needs a response...

You know, last year, when a speed challenge that centered on "the 4th of July" was announced, there was more than a little comment about a lack of days celebrating other national days. It's all in this thread. and it specifically referred to Canada Day...

It occurred to me then, and was confirmed now, that Langdon put those comments in his date book. Nice to see a country-specific challenge other than the USA in the mix.

This will be a "goose chase" for me (wink wink)

Just don't call them Canadian geese as so many do. It's Canada goose or Canada geese, never Canadian goose/geese. That's just what they are called.

I didn't enter, but I commented 100%. I might come back and vote if I have time.
