Originally posted by Digital Quixote: When I click on the thumbnail for a ribbon winning photo, it would be great to see the photo "as submitted" ... to be able to click a button to see the original (possibly resized to protect dial-up users). Since one goal of the site is to learn, seeing the original and the post-processed version together would be an opportunity to learn how to better crop, orient, and adjust a photo for maximum appeal...

As others have said, I agree and also think this would be an exceptional learning opportunity. If it stirs up controversy, so much the better. We can learn from that too. However, I do think it should be optional with the photographer.

Or another way would be to link it in the photographer's
comments section similar to what I did here:
Only problem with that is, over time, we need to do a little
portfolio clean-up and will eventually be discarded to make room
for our newest submissions & photos to share.

Here's my original for "Second City":
Note it's quite dark compared with the final image. This was done intentionally, as not to excessively blow out the city lights. The image was shot at a conservative 200ISO to limit noise and enable me to bring up the shadow exposure without excessive noise. Even so, I did use NeatImage.
This image was shot as a part of a panorama. You can see the full panorama (in a much reduced size) here. The full image size is 8616 px wide by 2484 px high (43 inches wide by 12.4 inches high @ 200 ppi). The exposures were at f/4.0, 1/5 second, hand-held (braced against a window). Taken from the observation deck atop the John Hancock Tower in downtown Chicago. |

Maybe change things so that when the submission is uploaded, the original goes with it. This would be optional, of course...there could be situations where someone would not want the original made public. For example, there may be non-model-released people in the original photo that have been cropped out for the submission.
Then when the challenge is over, make the originals available for people to see. Eventually (hopefully), it would become the norm for people to submit the originals with their challenge entries.
It would also speed up validation if necessary... |
I like this submission idea the best. I do think that the original should have to be resized to 640pxl and fit within the 150kb guidline though. Out of all of the different submission ideas stated here this on IMO is the best so far. This is similar to how you upload to digitalphotocontest.com.

This is bending the rules a bit too much for a photograpy contest.
Would be great for a photoshop contest.
But I like the creativity and exelent final image.
added:
Just checked and saw that it had been DQ.
Still nice idea and good image.

IIRC, this particular image was DQd for those very reasons...
