My Photo-A-Day Project
On June 19, 2004, I started my "Photo-A-Day" project. I am now 107 photos into the 365 that I intend to shoot. Several other people around here are doing this as well, which inspired me to give it a try.
I have found some interesting benefit in this project. I'm shooting when I normally would not, which seems to be the greatest benefit. I'm also constantly looking for photo opportunities in order to have a new photo every day for the set. Lots of days produce nothing more than some mundane snapshot. Other days produce something interesting and insightful. My objective isn't to have a 'great' photo every day. I'm simply creating a photo 'diary' of sorts. Lots of the photos here are nothing more than something I was doing or somewhere I visited on the particular day of the shoot. I include a brief comment to go along with each photo, and then I print a 4x6 and put it in an album. At the end of this project, I hope to make a 365 photo 'poster' print of everything I shot during the project.
Just yesterday, someone asked me how I manage to avoid the creativity 'funk' that plagues us all at some point. The Photo-A-Day project was my simple answer. When I'm constantly looking for photo opportunities for this, I tend to see much more than I normally would. Some of these simple snapshots in this series have inspired me to do other things, and my 'to do' list has grown phenomenally since I started the project.
In general, 'series' work tends to keep creativity flowing also. When I am looking for a photo project and don't have any fresh ideas on hand, I simply revert to one of my series sets and shoot something for it.
My Town
"My Town" has become much more than I expected in the beginning. This is an easy series to use for 'something to do' when photographic 'funk' sets in. All I need to do is wander around town and look for an interesting place or people going about their everyday business. These photos are also being printed and put in an album along with the comments that go with each image.
Artist's Hands
More recently, my "Artist's Hands" series has started to take shape. This series is relatively new and I'm just collecting some photos that will hopefully turn into a 15-20 photo set in a year or two. Most of them are musicians at this point, but over time, I hope to include other types of artists. These are a little more difficult to 'find' while wandering around.
Railroad
The railroad series is another ongoing set that I have been playing with. Some of these images immediately came to mind when the "Parts" challenge was posted. I haven't worked actively on this series lately, but there are several images on my 'to do' list that will fit here whenever I take a notion to do them.
I'm interested in seeing what types of series work or photo-a-day projects anyone else has in progress (or completed). I would also love to hear your comments about the projects or any individual photos that are a part of them. Lots of photos seem to have interesting stories to go along with them.

Your pictures are incredible. I love the close-ups of the trains. Very dramatic. The "My Town" series is inspiring. I have a few shots I have taken around my town, but nothing like yours. You have truly documented a piece of history for your town. Great job! "Artists Hands" is so unique. I love the personality of the shots.
Thank you for posting these! Keep up the great work!

I was looking through the my town gallery and I don't mean to sound nitpicky but the background color kind of destroys any sense of contrast when viewing the images, however they are very nice. |

Hey, excellent photos, man, jeez! I like your photo-a-day project, I've been trying to do that with poetry but oyvey that's rough! It's dwindled to a poem-a-week. And same goes for photography.
Anyway, I do have a "themed" collection of candid nyc people photos on my site, but it hasn't been updated in a while... laziness, for shame. I've got tons from over the summer to load up...eventually. As for the photos, they're nothing special, but it's become a huge addiction!
I enjoyed looking through your pictures, and will continue to now that I know there's much more to look forward to.
Thanks!
Katy

The only themed set I'm working on are the chimps. Hopefully I'll put together a nice little photo essay from over the last year and get it published in a book sometime. |
