Following this thru to its logical conclusion, pastors and preachers and priests should be armed as well.

They are, with something far more deadly than firearms... ;-)

Oh, Cory, tell me please, how a bullet through the heart and the slaying of your flock of worshipers
makes a preacher, pastor or priest invulnerable to yet another massacre by gunfire.

The band-aid of banning the confederate flag is another deflection of this serious problem in our country.

Again, I refer folks to the Australian solution (referenced earlier) that has resulted in no mass slayings in 10 years.

The lethality of religion has nothing to do with the killing of the faithful. Tell me again about how many millions have been slaughtered by the faithful (of one flavor or another) in the name of God/Allah/Ra/deity of choice using bare hands, sticks, stones, swords, spears, arrows, guns, car bombs, suicide vests and all manner of objects or tools of destruction.

It's not just the brutal, outright slaughter either, look at those in power who use their faith to justify changing the rules in ways that treat others as less than human, often with deadly effect.

Religion is far more deadly than guns in the US

So, Spork, are you telling me that those folks who died in Charleston deserved it? Surely not.

Not at all.

The numbers of those killed by in the name of God simply dwarfs the number of those killed in mass shootings. Religion in the hands of those who would misuse it is more dangerous than a gun in the hands of those who would misuse it.

yes, many more people die in car crashes, due to poor diet, smoking etc etc. but if the US figures for deaths due to these other causes was more than 10 times higher than elsewhere in the developed world it would be considered intolerable and there would rightfully be an outcry.

And any one of those causes kills far more people than gun related criminal homicides, some 50-60 times as many people. Yet here you are, wasting your energy on guns, when the potential savings in terms of lives is far greater if you were fixated on almost any other cause of death

I just wanted to share a positive note here...

South Carolina is standing strong today!
Wearing blue and white, remembering the nine.
Raising our palmetto flag high.
Praying instead of hating.

It makes me proud to live in a state where even with all of these issues of guns, violence, or even the confederate flag, we still have some peace.

Shouldn't this have been thrown in the rant folder by now?

Until you figure out how to un-invent the gun it's just silly talk.

Silly talk? Maybe, but I'm grateful that SC has not yet tossed this into Rant, where such subjects languish as perhaps planned by those who would supress them.

Even tho the last 2 thoughtful comments came from our Rays in England and Canada, who give valuable perspective on this divisive in the USA, subject.

A thoughtful discussion on the role of guns in the society of the USA needs to be continued until a wedge has been drawn in the battle for gun control. Presently it's owned by those who seem to want guns for eveyone.

Now, someone, tell me, please why simple rules such as:

1. proficiency with guns should be demonstrated before a license (yes, a license) is issued,
and, additionally proficiency with guns should be demonstrated subsequently at intervals thereafter.
2. gun ownership must be accompanied by a background check to avoid ownership by those convicted of felonies.

Other countries (i.e. Canada, England, Australia) have somehow surmounted these perceived obstacles.

Does this mean that the United Stated who sayhs it "knows how" can't find a solution?
Do these minor restrictions hinder the formation of a "militia" as some would argue?

My husband was a gun owner and an owner of a license issued on his 21st birthday.
His father was honored by having the "Robert Linus Steele Rifle Range" in his town
named in his honor many years ago for his guidance in educating the sons and daughters
of his community in the use of firearms.

You make a great point. We should start requiring all rights to be licensed, think of the revenue opportunities!

Besides, this would also allow us to get rid of that pesky right to life, liberty, blah, blah, blah.

And that whole free speech thing, gawd how I hate that - it'd be far more pleasant if everyone was required to go through an approval process to approve things they want to say, so as to not offend anyone else, and of course this would have the awesome side benefit of keeping people from looking stupid when they talk.

I'd also be fully in support of issuing breeding licences, stop the vermin from reproducing, ya know.

Amen! It has been inspiring to watch how this is being handled by the people involved in South Carolina!

I read through every painful post here- where no one agrees, even with good points, because no matter what, there is always some argument to "keep you from taking my gun."

These incidents(Newtown, Charleston) get publicity because they are particularly brutal, and there is NO solution that more guns could solve. Always something- Mental Illness! Donuts kill more people!
Its Bullshit. And, its always (at least a good deal of the time)the same white kid that gets access to guns through parents. Racism and bad political ideas, come from parents, just like Dad's views on gun "freedom."

A very interesting thing about the Charleston shooting is the police/law enforcement reaction. What if a black or muslim guy killed 9 white people in a church in Boston?
All types of paramilitary police would be set forth upon surrounding areas, freedoms lost, no stone unturned until caught.

---In South Carolina? it took a citizen to step up, follow and make the call. And then, this dangerous mass murderer is brought in with a vest on and without one scratch? In a country where the police are very "concerned about their own safety" and would just as soon not take chances, killing jaywalkers, cigarette sellers and minor traffic violators(all black)- or shooting and roughing up black people repeatedly- this guy comes in without a scratch? Figures in states with streets named for Confederate Generals under a still-flying rebel flag. I never advocate police violence, but in this situation their response was unusually tame.

(It is almost as bad as the Police Sergeant who shot his ex-wife in front of their 7 year old daughter, in New Jersey, and his friends on the force talked his out of suicide for 1/2 hour while she died from lack of medical attention, only to arrested gently, and hugged as a fellow cop road in the back of the car with him.)

The country will not truly improve or heal until there is meaningful gun control, police reform, and open race relation discussions. Lets leave the bullshit about donuts and heart attacks and automobiles out of it.

A fun thought: drugs are totally illegal, and significantly harder to manufacture than a gun.
