I placed my order for my Canon 20D within days of the announcement of the product. Adorama said that they would ship in the order in which received. They told me that I wasn't too far down on the list. Okay, it's now Sept 30th and so many people have already received their 20Ds, but Adorama won't tell me how far down on the list I am or how many cameras Canon usually sends in a new product roll-out. I am sure they have precedent. I have asked in many ways, many times "What number am I on the list for you to ship the Canon 20D body to?" Their response is usually something like "We are one of Canon's largest distributors". So, I ask again, "What number in line, am I, to be sent a Canon 20D body? I am sure a company of your size would have very good records of this information that you can quickly look up for me!" I get no response to my question once again.
Yesterday, I emailed them, asking if they believed I would have the camera by Oct 22, when I leave town for a wedding (for a week). I no longer have my 10D (sold it). I received no response. Today, I check their website and it says they will be on holiday til Oct 10th. I am a bit confused. I respect taking religious holidays off of work, but does the whole company have to go on holiday? They claim to be such a HUGE Canon distribution company, that I would think there'd be someone there to answer questions and ship orders while some employees take the next 10 days off.
I was wondering, they have NOT charged my credit card yet, but I do have a receipt (pdf) for my order. Is it too late to cancel and find the camera somewhere else? Do you think it's possible to find this 20D somewhere else and receive it in time for my trip? If I do cancel, would there be ramifications? I don't know what to do.... I am so upset about this experience, especially their lack of communicating with me...

| These Jewish owned stores, including B&H shut down completely for all Jewish holidays. |

Both they and B&H are closed till October 10th.
I don't see why you wouldn't be able to cancel by calling them when they get back, assuming you could find another! As long as they haven't shipped it yet, they don't care--there's a queue! |

Yeah, but does B&H ignore your questions and not communicate with you when you have concerns? Adorama certainly doesn't take me seriously as a customer. They can't even answer a simple question "What number on the list am I?"
I create beaded necklaces and bracelets for people for the holidays, and I have a spreadsheet of who ordered what & when. If someone asked me "what number on the list am i for you to make my necklace?" I could answer, there are 5 before you, so you are 6th. Simple!!!
Why can't Adorama do that?

I know I am in queue, but their computer would be able to tell them if i were number 5 or 200. And their knowledge of Canon's previous roll-outs should tell them if I will be in the next shipment, or probably not til late Oct or early Nov. They would have some clue! They've been in business long enough to give me some idea!!! I would think. I am sorry, I am just upset. I have never dealth with any company who refused to answer my questions before, that I might not be able to walk away from the order.

Ari, I am in a similar situation with Adorama, but on a much smaller scale right now. I am waiting for my adpater so I can use lenses and filters with my new camera and I finally got a hold of them the other day. I am waiting it out for mine, but I was similarly disturbed. Anyway, my advice in your situation is to find the camera where you can (if you can) and keep trying to cancel the Adorama order (my email was sufficient before). If it still gets shipped to you, you can write "refused delivery" on the package and send it right back to them without opening it. I have done this before and you get full credit back fairly quickly. Good luck and please let us know what you end up doing.

I ordered my 10d at this time last year.. about the first week or so of October... You are oging to be on a rather long waiting list unless you got your order in as soon as Adorama started taking orders. This is common when a new product is announced. The vendors start taking orders before the product is available. If you can cancel your order, you can try to get one somewhere else. A local camera shop may be your best bet to find one in stock.

I know B&H, and probably Adorama, closed mid-day yesterday.
You could try Canoga camera, in CA. They have a good user rating on resellersratings.com. Priced as good or better than the NY crowd. I just ordered a lot of stuff from them, and they are responsive by phone (and email). |

I got my order in on Aug 23rd. The Canon announcement was the 19th. I would think I would be fairly high up on the list. But I have no idea, they won't tell me.

I've bought cameras from ButterflyPhoto.com twice now and have nothing but good things to say about them. Both times they upgraded me to express shipping for no charge and they have low prices.

i will contact them to see if they have any in stock. How are their warranties? I went with Adorama for their warranty and great warranty price. Ritz has such a high price for their warranty.

They don't have any in, and put me on hold forever when I called... they never came back. I am not sure of their customer satisfaction either. I will try them again. Butterflyphoto.com is on holiday as well and they don't have any in stock on their website. I am think I am screwed.
Is anyone else still waiting for their 20D, if so, when did you order and who from?

I would trust B&H. I'm a New Yorker, and that's the only place I shop, either online, or in person. The best customer service I've ever experienced. As long as the item is instock, you'll have it when you expect to. They'll ship it out right away.
In terms of the Jewish Holidays, B&H is run by Hassidam, which is the most religious sect of the religion. And whoever said "these Jewish run stores..." or something to that effect, could you please not phrase it that way, as I'm Jewish, and whether you meant it that way or not, I take offense to it.
Extra note:
here's a link to the page on the site
Canon EOS 20D 8.2 MP
Availability: Back-ordered
Note! This item is on backorder. Estimated delivery to B&H 2-4 weeks.
Being that the store is closed for 2 weeks, if you order it now, it should ship almost immediately if you buy it now. Call your credit card company and notify them that you will not be paying for the current charges when they come in from Adorama. And when you order it from B&H, order it Rush Delivery.

What the heck is offensive about saying a store is owned by a Jew to make clear the reason it is observing a jewish holiday?
Some people take PC to whole new levels of stupid |

Stephanie, I am sorry you were offended by a fellow DPCer in this thread, but I assure you they meant no harm. I, too, am Jewish, but I was a bit upset that an entire operation would shut down for the holidays. I did not realize the entire company was of the same faith and therefore every employee took off work. I am not used to that where i am from... so many mixed faiths in companies that some are there working when others are on holiday. I didn't mean to jump to conclusions though...
On a brighter note, Spazmo's brilliant idea to call Samy's worked wonders! They have a 20D kit in stock that's only $50 more than the body (which is a much better deal than I have been seeing online). And they have great warranty prices and coverage. I put my deposit down and am going after work to pick it up! Wish me luck getting to Fairfax from Pasadena during rush hour!!!!
Also, anyone have any ideas how to cancel my order with Adorama, since they are out of town? I want to do it with dignity, but not offend them. I am upset with them, but perhaps it was just a bad time for them and that's why they keep ignoring me. I should give them the benefit of the doubt. They already lost me as a customer. I just need to make it official, without recourse on my wallet. Any suggestions?

| According to their website, they don't charge until they ship so the cancellation shouldn't be a problem at all. I would just email them and say that you were bothered by the lack of communication during the period before their closing and because they couldn't assure you that you would receive your camera in time, you decided to go with another vendor. |

Arie two points:
1 - I wouldn't use a new camera I'm unfamiliar with to do a wedding shoot, I would wait to be thoroughly familiar with the camera first.
2 - For new popular Canon products, it's not unusual for loooonggg waiting lists, I've waited 4 months on a waiting list to get my 1D Mark II

It's not the fact that the stores themselves were mentioned to be run by Jews, but the phrase "These Jews" as to single them out. I'm sorry if I'm "taking it to far", when all my life, that phrase has never been said in anything but a derrogatory manner.
If it was not meant in that way, fine. But don't jump down my throat when I just asked a simple phrase not to be used. |

What was said was:
"These jewish owned stores" not "These jews"
Can we get a list of phrases that offend you so that we can avoid them?
I am totally and completely against racisim however I think people read a lot into innocent comments.

Luckily, I know the 10D very well, and so the 20D shouldn't be too unfamiliar. Also, I am not the primary photographer, but I am the one in charge of getting fun, friend shots that the pro may not think to get. It's a very informal wedding, and the bride & groom are not paying me. I was going to burn them a CD of the photos before I even left FL. But, if we need to use film, then they may not want to pay to develope them, and I don't have the funds (after the flight) to develope 5 rolls of film for them at a nice, good-quality photo printer in town. It wasn't life or death, but just a true inconvenience it would have been not to have had a GOOD digital camera at the wedding...

Thank you, I will. It's not that they weren't friendly. They were very kind on the phone, but they would NOT answer my questions. I wasn't asking "when will you ship my camera?" I was asking how many cameras canon usually sends to them per shipment, what number am I on the list, when do they expect their next shipment (they told me they left a message asking canon that question and that canon was great at getting back to them)... but no response...
I was just annoyed about that. Luckily, Samy's says they are holding one for me. I am going to run over there after work! Wish me luck!
