Method of taking street shots

I'm very new at street shooting and I find it very enjoyable but I have to say my approach is quite different than the approach in the video.
I know he's within his legal right but I don't think I can bring myself to shoot like that.
I'm sure there are other ways to get good street shots without being so intrusive. No?

Guess it works in some parts of the world.
Don't ever try shooting like this in Asian countries.... well at least your dentist will become rich.

To contrast with Bruce Gilden's style have a look at Bruce Davidson.

Bruce Davidson

He's not really a street photographer but you can learn a lot from him.

If you can find it, look for descriptions of how Cartier-Bresson would shoot. Not really anything like this guy and better results too.

I think these shots are interesting to a degree, but they're basically documenting the subject's reaction when some guy gets up in his face with a flash and a camera. It's kind of like the guy is a paparazzi shooting regular people.

A very abrasive style of shooting that I don't care for. I agree that what he is frequently getting is his subject's reaction to his presence. I much prefer capturing real life as it happens, which may be harder because you can't create the interaction.

In a location like that, you can take photos all day and people won't realize you are photographing them. It's the same for me when I go to the FW Stockyards. Lots of people around with cameras and nobody notices.

Wasn't there a well known photographer who shot like this back in the 60's and 70's? I recall a similar discussion thread a few years ago. Maybe it is the same guy.
