From the Voting Rules
You May Not: vote in a manner that suggests an intent to disrupt the voting system.
We Will: disqualify challenge entries from, suspend or ban anyone who abuses the voting system in any way. |
Does this include those who flaunt the anonymity rule and use themselves as subjects? Just asking. |

Heck, there's a number of people who use themselves as models, and even more if you add the family-member stables. I've done a lot of selfies. Wendy has, Jenn Huls has, Samantha, Gyaban, the list goes on and on.
I think we worry too much about this "anonymity" shtick. I doubt Sempermarine racked up all those ribbons due to "Cool! There's Jeff again! Let's give him a 9!" Nah.... The picyures wsere genuinely well made and funny as hell. |

As well as all the recognisable self portraits and family members we also have very recognisable locations, subject matter and, perahps most of all, style. You might not recognise any of the people in one one of Jager's images but the photos are instantly recognisable due to his approach and look. So, yea, the anonymity thing is nothing to worry about at all i'd say.

If anonymity means so little, why keep up the ruse? It certainly perpetuates legacy a bit. If it is all merit, let the photographer be known. There isn't much intelligent argument against it. |

We live in a popularity based culture, just look at Facebook etc. to think that that doesn't effect the scores on DPC is naive at best.
I do think that we shouldn't be concerned with scores though, it's not as if a good score here automatically means the photo is a good one, most of the top scoring stuff here couldn't be exposed in a exibition of any sort anywhere. We should just chill and have fun. |

Despite not being model material, I've occasionally had a good reason to use myself as the subject. Some have done well (inluding a couple of ribbons), others have floundered. I don't think my being recognized in the photo has affected it at all. If anything, it may have caused some people to skip voting on my entry that would have otherwise given it a positive vote.
Bear_Music seem particularly good at picking a particular member's entry out of the crowd.

LOL, I did not expect this comment to get so much attention....................to answer all the questions in just one spot.................No, that is not how I vote and I hardly ever vote on challenges that I have entered (actually been so busy lately have not voted much at all). These types of threads get started all the time, especially just before DPL, and as a sorta statistician (I am a demographer and do lots of statistic calculations) I look at voting patterns and such. Not much I can do when looking at them because I do not have access to all the data. The only thing I have noticed is that a large majority of the photos I have looked at have a higher average from non-participants then participants. Yes there are exceptions, this is just based off my casual non scientific look at photos votes.

There could be a few explanations for this that don't include tactical voting. The one that comes to me immediately is that a higher proportion of non participants may be new members who are more readily impressed, while the participants have become jaded from seeing similar shots many times before, often done better.

I agree, there are a lot of reasons as to why this is. Given access to all the voting data, a person could come up with a pretty good answer to that question, but with a margin of error for personal taste and such which could not be gleaned without getting everyone to fill out a survey to help narrow down that aspect.
Damn, If I ever go for my PhD forget expanding on my masters thesis......this would make a really awesome research project

Shoot... just do it like the government does... give everyone that enters a blue ribbon. Nobody gets their feelings hurt and problem solved.

Actually what I've found out lately is how low some newbies avg vote given is, just saying.....not everyone; but quite a lot.
And also members who don't have a horse in the race vote very high to bump their avg vote given, but I'm sure they wouldn't normally vote like that if they'd entered.... it's all vanity really.....

What I've learned is that the whining about scores never stops. I'm thinking about voting low to see if I can make their heads explode. |

What I suspect is that some people think they have it all figured out as to why some people vote the way they do. |

Not that I care all that much about scores but, to be honest, if you're in the clique, you get + 1 or 2 more on your total (especially when the pic is recognized). I've been keeping an eye on it for years. |
