You could find artwork on a stock site, but generally it is where companies will go to look for images to use in their advertising and other literature. So the best sellers are often things that illustrate people displaying emotions or doing things associated with what is being offered.

I knew there was a reason I enjoy Mad Men:)
So I'm supposed to judge what a company would want to hang out on a times square billboard? Is that more like it?
hmmmm.

Or as an appropriate background to use for the message (text, etc...) they're trying to get out there. |

When I've searched for photos, I keep finding stock images. I've found everything from perdy to stupid and most things in between. I bet if you took every shot in this challenge, you could probably find something similar on a stock site.

That's my take. Here's an example of one of my past challenge entries that was used as stock. I received a request asking if I would donate usage of this image for a firefighters fundraiser. Since I had already made some money off of it from a Getty sale and it was a good cause, I gave them the high res version to use for this campaign. Not sure if they actually used it, but it was one they were considering.
Note, this was a mockup they sent me using the version on Flickr. The one I sent them for actual use had all the identifying logos removed.

Yeah. It's pretty wide open, as long as the image is fairly generic (no logos, etc...) it's fair game for stock photo use. The majority of photos I have up on stock photo sites do not have people in them at all. |

I thought the point was to take as creative take on a stock photo as possible, not a solid, traditional version. |

To me, that is always the point when I shoot -- try to get a creative take rather than a traditional one. That's pretty much what I look for when I vote, too. |

"It's time again for you to put yourself in the shoes of a freelancer trying to sell your work to a stock photography company. Make your photograph sellable, but be as original as you can."
Exactly, and moreso here. I think if this last part wasn't included, we could expect Platonic Ideal Stock Photos. |

Are those the ones with the high scores or the low ones?

Yep. I wonder if folks know what "Stock Photography" is... now that I'm looking at them all and hearing the comments.
Stock Photography is there for companies to search and buy an image that's already there... and for sale with differing license usages available normally... instead of hiring a photographer to hire models or whatever (which is much more expensive) and shoot something specifically for them. They get to see the image up front before they buy it... not like hiring someone to shoot for you and trying to tell them exactly what you want.f
This is why logos, etc are not normally found in Stock Photography. The purchaser would have to go to the owner of that logo, etc and buy the rights to that before they could use that image for profit. And... normally, they do not want to advertise for another company in the shot that they're purchasing to advertise for their own company.
The idea is to create a scene (with or without people) that is generic enough to entice some company to use it to advertise or in a brochure or... whatever... for their company and save them money by not hiring it done themselves.
Greeting card companies do this all of the time... real estate companies like families enjoying themselves to stick on their brochure or website to show that if you buy, you'll live a perfect life and be happy just like the folks in this photograph that they bought from a stock photography place.
:D

I was really stuck on this one so I searched the internet for "stock photography" sites. At first I just looked at whatever was coming up on a few sites that I went on and then I started searching more specifically and found... EVERYTHING I searched for could be a stock photo!
Started at an amazing 7.04. Now a 5.96. Well then. |

Speaking of meh... (can you tell that I'm really bored tonight?)...
Everyone should look into Meh.com
They are a shoot off of Amazon (I think) and sell an item every day. Only ONE item... you either get that deal on that day, or it's gone and there's another one after midnight.
I've gotten some real bargains on stuff I needed.
Now... back to your original scheduling...

OH! And... they're funny.
It's worth the effort to go there every day to see what they're saying about that day's item.
Hilarious.

Sounds like a knockoff of the Woot.com concept.
