I wonder what people use to carry their camera with a 70-200mm lens attached (like the Canon 4L version)?

I had a Lowepro Off-Trail 2 on order, but I was beginning to wonder if a 12" bag is too tall for a waist pack? I was wondering if if anyone here uses it? Or what you use? I was wondering if the Tamrac Velocity Sling would be a better idea, but it too looks so big, that I would want to go with the Velocity 7 model, which is listed as 1/4" too short to handle the Rebel and the lens that I measure as 9.5 long (and it's listed as 9.25). I want the smallest bag that will fit the camera with that lens, plus (sometimes) an extra smaller lens and some small accessories.

Ideas and experience please...

I'd like to know, too. Currently, I carry that lens (and every other lens I own, plus a laptop) in a LowePro CompuTrekker.

I used to use shoulder bags, the kind that have box shaped cavities and a single strap.

Now we have a Lowepro Mini Trekker Classic (I think that's the name) and a Micro Trekker 200.

I need a new bag since I got the 70-200 f/4l. I can just about get it and my 17-40 f/4l in the bag with the 50 f/1.8 mk1 but it is a bit of a squeeze. Its an old Billingham bag and I can't fault it, was out in thunderstorms for over an hour, the bag was sodden but inside was nice and warm. If you want an over the shoulder opposed to a backpack I'd suggest getting a second hand Billingham.

I use a Tamrac Pro 8 as my regular hold everything bag and a Lowepro backpack (I think it's the Micro Trekker) for when I'm going to out and about and don't want to kill my shoulder.

I use a Crumpler bag and am very happy with it so far.

There are lots of bags out there that will do this. I don't think it is a good idea to transport a camera anywhere with a large lens attached.

Found some reviews of the Lowepro here. Some pretty experienced photographers rated it highly. No mention of why you shouldn't carry your camera with a large lens attached.

I just woulnd't take the risk. A heavy lens puts unnecessary stress on the camera frame. Most of the bags accomodate this capability, but I just don't like the idea of it. If the bag gets bumped or jarred, there is a few extra pounds of stress on your camera. I never put my camera in the bag with any lens on it. Its just my preference as an extra precaution with some expensive gear.

And, for what its worth, I have found that Lowepro stuff is as good as anything else on the market and it's cheaper than Tamrac. I have a Tamrac Expedition 7 backpack that I really like and I have the Lowepro Commercial AW shoulder bag. I have several other smaller bags that get used occasionally, but these two are my primary bags. Both are excellent.

I just got the Tamrac 5612/Pro 12 to cary both my Digital Rebel and 20D both at the same time with their Battery Grips attached and I love it. Got it off of eBay new with an $89.00 buy it now and $10.00 shipping.

I use the Lowepro Computrecker, and I never leave a long lens on the body. I usually stick the 50mm f1.8 mk II, or the 28mm f2.8 lens on the body whilst its in the bag,

Love the bag, but its just getting a tad small now epecially when I carry all the lenses and filters.

Neil,

If you are looking for a small bag, I use the Micro Trekker 100 with 10D and 70-200mm F2.8 IS attached. It's a bit of a squeeze but you can fit it in, thus :

It's a really great bag! Originally thought I would end up getting a bigger one but this is so compact, robust and carries all I need for a few days shooting.

Hope this helps.

Year of birth, as I had used the username on other sites where 'tomlewis' had already gone.

I have a LowePro Nova 4 AW bag and it's very nice. Inside the main compartment I have the 10D with either my 24-70mm or my 16-35mm mounted and the other lens is in its pouch next to my 550EX flash. In the middle section I have my rocket air, 10D body cover and the rear lens cover in case I need to swap lenses. I also have a few filters thrown in there. In the front pocket, I have some Zeiss lens wipes, lenspen, spare battery, spare CF cards and cleaning solution. Fully loaded, I'd guess that the bag weighs somewhere around 8-10 lbs.

I was thinking of getting a lowepro backpack myself..
For the people that own one, what is the build quality like? especially the zips and seam strength I'm interested in..

Consider the Delsey Pro line of camera bags. Soundly secure, infinate number of configurations, and reasonably priced. Same Quality levels as Manfrotto products. Very well designed. Both shoulder and backpack models.

If their backpacks are anything like my Nova 4 AW, I'd highly recommend their backpacks. Oftentimes I'm grabbing for the camera bag by the rings attached to the camera bag vs the handle or the strap itself and have not had any problems. This bag has been many many places and it still looks good. And like I said in my previous post, the total bag weight is approximately 8-10 lbs maybe more and i could easily put a couple extra lenses in there but my back and shoulder wouldn't like it much. :)

I just bought that one last weekend, and I really like it, too. High quality and well padded. :) Highly recommend the LowePro brand.
