Saw that this morning. Sorry, not entirely true...camera shoppes are now online or DSLRs are sold at major retailers (i.e. Best Buy). And if it were true that people were only using camera phones to the exclusion of everything else then the price of say a Canon M III would come down significantly to remain competitive by keeping their foot in the market.

My daughter just bought an Electronic Piano (aka keyboard) ... she says it sounds almost the same as her piano at home... she can make it play almost any other instrument she wants and it does recording!!

Should I send the metronome along with the music she wants or does that come built in?

I imagine she will have an acoustic piano again too, or so I hope, when she finally has room for it.

Most keyboards have both a metronome function and a variety of rhythm tracks built-in. If it has touch-sensitive keys she's all set for a while, assuming she can play a keyboard instrument in the first place ... :-)

Ha! She's quite the accomplished pianist. It's the Electronic part I have a problem with (all classical stringed instruments that I know are made of wood!) .. And I was kidding about the metronome (though there wouldn't have been any way for you to know that:)

On the other hand, I know a 22-yr old with limited knowledge of Photography. Like so many, most of her knowledge of the world (& photography) is obtained by watching TV. But she has a smart phone. She's taking pictures & videos of 'everything' & found an app that will let her put them all together in a slide show with music & captions. With no idea how difficult this all can be, she just jumped right in & I am impressed how few mistakes she's making. She linked her phone to her boyfriend's phone & they can see each other's videos right after they are captured. If she had to buy a video camera, a still camera, a computer, & editing software...she would never have acquired this interesting hobby.

I think there's a lot of value in a device that's small, light weight, intuitive to use, & within easy reach to purchase. The fact that it sends the content to the cloud "instantly" & also does phone calls is amazing. The smart phone has changed the world. What amazing times we live in.

maybe i shouldn't have called it "sad", but it is a reality. sure, there are plenty of places you can buy cameras, but they are either huge, warehouse-type operations, like b&h, etc, or they are online. the bare, handful of mom-and-pop, local camera shops are hanging by threads.

i just hope that, for those of us looking to get back to the 'art of film', the prices for the consumerables don't become too exorbitant.

Maybe the reason why I don't feel it as a sad reality is that in my whole entire life I have never once entered a Mom & Pop camera shop. The closest I've come is to enter a Mom & Pop drug store, which is where I brought my film as a kid to get it developed. My Dad was declaiming that no real photographer would use an autofocus lens. I once entered a big commercial printing operation to get some slides printed. I greeted the first digital camera that I could afford (at CostCo) with cries of delight--I already had a computer with Photoshop 3.x & I was born ready. Likewise the first cellphone I could afford, I was right there jumping for joy. My first smartphone was iPhone 3S. I can no longer jump so much for joy, but I am still a satisfied customer. The days when the expertise of the Mom or Pop behind the counter meant something are gone for good. I can do my own research online & make up my own mind.

I have to say that I'm glad for B&H and the like as the two camera shops around here are so arrogant & snotty, that they can't fail soon enough to suit me. I was appalled at how NON-service oriented they are/were when I genuinely was interested in keeping my money local. I wasn't trying to shop them against the warehouses & box stores, although with proprietary pricing enforced by the manufacturer it's no big deal, but they just always acted like they were doing me a favor by taking my money. I've prolly dumped $10-$12K in B&H's coffers and I'm VERY happy with the way I have always been treated by them.

I do have to add that like pixelpig, I was thrilled when I was master of my own destiny with the digital age. I hated what I had to go through to get developing & printing done......and the expense!

i use a camera store in sheffield family owned, harrisons cameras they have a big web site as well but you go into the store 5-6 guys know me i get good discount on stuff i trade in old gear and buy second hand gear and buy new gear, i get film and consumables from there i go in for a chat, I've even helped sell stuff while I've been in there to other photographers etc.

i can ring them up with questions etc they are canon main dealer so deal with all my canon professional services stuff (also nikon, sony, panasonic, olympus)

they lend me new gear like the 1dx for a week or two can't fault them.

they are always busy and how a camera shop should be, they have Facebook page with monthly comps that win small prices and they have a photo wall with prints on of local photograhers etc

kinda place any real photographer would love.

I just read the comments on that comic strip. There is another good comment that sums up the sad reality of our times..."Hey, I’ve seen that look on a retail clerk before â€Â¦ I think it was at a store that sells watches"

Just like our camera store on Cape Cod, except it's a bit smaller, so it has a more limited range. It's an official Canon dealer (and a very good one) but not, sadly, a Sony dealer :-(
