It looks like there may be a new standard in RAW images coming down the pipes in the future...

Interesting... I wonder if it'll catch on or if it will fall out of favor, kinda like the .png format. |

Yes ... there was an earlier thread too. From reading the press release it will "have" to catch on as it is a free utility which PS users will use. |

That would actually be very cool. Especially since Adobe if foisting it as an Open Standard.
If this takes root in the digital photo industry, it could seriously open up doors for new digital photo software applications across a myriad of platforms.
I find this to be a very interesting step for Adobe to take. By releasing this as an Open Standard, they are in a way helping generate innovation, by making it easier for groups such as The GIMP developers to possibly spend more time focusing on what their app can do then to fight with reverse engineering various RAW Formats to be capable of editing.
This is impressive, most impressive. |

It is about time this problem was brought under a standard. This only means that raw's will be read across platforms and programs without the propietary bs that currently exist. |

while i think this could be a good idea too, i'm gonna go out on a limb and play devil's advocate:
if the manufacturer's all have to make their sensor's RAW data conform to a single standard, they will probably argue that it is limited compared to proprietary RAW, and so will continue to provide RAW support (probably in addition to this), like they do now with JPG. i understand the argument against jpg is the loss of quality by compression... but it'd be very easy for nikon or canon or olympus to say "well this digital negative format doesn't really accomodate for feature X of this sensor" .....
now i personally think it would be pretty cool, and yes it sure could open a few more doors up.
