No one?
Let me crack the ice. Ever since the challenge was announced, i knew that it will not be an opening line from a book. I'm not much of a reader. But a movie or a song, that was feasible. Bowie's "Space Oddity" got stuck in my mind while watching a quiz show on TV. There was a question regarding it on the Croatian edition of "The Chase". And this was submitted:
This, on the other hand, became to be as a combination of two shots. They were not meant to be combined, but the idea was born while browsing the candidates.
But this was not the first and original idea. This was:
It was abandoned due to DQ-able background. It is a shot from a space encyclopedia. There was was suggestion to make it obvious that the background was a page from a book, but i wasn't up for it. There was a lot of cleanup involved to even out the "Earth" and cleanup reflections and text from the page. The background itself wasn't in the original idea. Major Tom and his capsule were to float in the pitch black of the space, but the black elements on the subject blended into the "space". As for the subject, the whole scene was supported on lego blocks that were masked out in post processing. It is a composite of two shots of the same scene but focused differently (one on the astronaut and the other on the space ship). There was an option to ditch the background and try to lighten up the black edges, but i already had the alternate shots and went with that.

Here are my outtakes:
It was a hard decision which one to submit. Finally I choose this
in favour of the humorous factor.
Obviously my opinion on what's funny is different from the opinion of most voters. There might be local differences on this subject, since when voting started, the crowd from AUS and NZ gave higher scores than I received when US and CAN voters joined in.
But now I'm curious if one of my outtakes would have done better in the opening line challenge. |

@ damjanev
Your entry was the better choice - for DQ safety reasons and also because the subject doesn't look that much Lego than the earth-space-composition. |
