I have owned a D70 for many many years and have gotten some really nice shots out if but have really lost interest in photography in the last 2 years. I ran across a Best Buy offer selling a D7000 for $629.99. Is this a good deal? I have to imagine it would be an upgrade from my old D70.

Will my current lenses and flash be interchangeable with the D7000?
I know this is an old camera as well but being that I am always strapped for cash it's hard for me to afford newer models. Is this a good deal or a great deal at this point for a 4 year old model?

For me that's a LOT of money for a camera that's 4 years old and whose sensor pales in comparison to the 24MP DX sensors of even the current lower grade models.

For your money, find another $70 and get a refurbished D7100 from Adorama (//www.adorama.com/INKD7100R.html). As an owner of both cameras (D7000 and D7100) the improvements to IQ w/o the anti-aliasing filter and the much better high ISO noise (IMO you get 2 full stops improvement - D7000 maxes for me at 1600 but I routinely go to 6400 on the D7100) make this a no brainer.

You will be happy with any upgrade you do as far as Nikon's latest offerings. I agree that the 7000 is almost dated now......a D5300 will give you more trhan you could possibly imagine, especially after your D70.

Nikon is showing $699.00 w/$100 off right now. HD1080 Vid, 24.2 MP, 5 FPS, Wi-Fi built in....

Nikon D5300

When you upgrade, IMNSHO it's better to get a current offering that may initially seem to be a step down, except that entry level now has all but completely surpassed what pro grade was five years ago.

There are so many options on the market that it's hard for the amateur to wade through.
01/04/2015 07:28:34 PM · #5
WOW. I just reviewed the D5300 and it has wifi built in to share from your PC and smart phone immediately. I was not even aware that technology existed but it makes sense. Boy have I been out of the game. All my D70 lenses and SB-600 speedlite should work with that?

Has everyone had good experiences with Nikons refurbished products?

I won't bother chiming in on which camera body to buy, but your D70-compatible glass and flash should work just fine with your next crop-sensor camera. I've had no problems using all my lenses, old and new, with the D7100. It's if and when you go full frame that you have to worry about lens compatibility. Good luck!

ETA Just saw your new post...if the D5300 sounds good and has features you'll find useful that the D7000/7100 lack, why not? And in all likelihood I will probably get my first ff as a refurb, in another couple years or so.

Look at the specs or download the manual for the one you are thinking about buying to check about the SB600. When I switched from the old Fuji S3 Pro to the D7000 I lost TTL metering with my older flash.
I had to buy an SB800 to have a fully compatible flash.
It was a surprise, as the 7000 arrived Friday morning and I went to shoot a wedding the next afternoon. It was fortunate that I used to shoot film and knew how to use the auto mode in the flash, and manual settings on the camera.

All your lenses should work with the new models, and for certain they will work with the 7000 if that's where you end up. The 7000 meters with the older Ai manual lenses too, in aperture priority mode. The newer cams probably do as well.

Just for quick reference I have the following lenses but it seems from the posts so far that I would be good. I have a decision to make.

Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED
Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm f/1.8D
Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G
Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Macro

After reading further between the 2 mentioned cameras the D5300 would not work with all my lenses becuase is does not have a focus motor limiting me to only using AF-S DX lenses. Refurbed on Nikons official website cost $899.96. The Adorama refurb is looking a little better bang for the my buck.

If your gear list on DPC accurate, you might consider that:

1. The Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm f/1.8D will not autofocus on a low-end Nikon DX DSLR (D3xxx, D5xxx). These cameras lack the screw drive and autofocus motor and are fully compatible only with lenses that have built-in autofocus motor. Metering should be OK as well as focus confirm for manual focus.

2. The two AF-S lenses that you have (the 35mm and the 18-70mm), should work fine with any Nikon DX DSLR.

3. The compatibility of the Sigma 28-300mm should be checked. It depends on whether it has built in autofocus motor or relies on the screw drive from the camera. Sigma and Tamron are known to provide different variants of the same lens, with and without autofocus motor.

ETA: Your post with the lens list came while i was writing the text above. It is the same list of lenses.

Then I edited my post. LOL

I think I found the same info as you were typing. Thanks for the help though.

D7100 is looking a little better for me and still in my range and will work with my lenses. I'll still read up for a few more days before I make a decision but everyone is being very helpful and I thank you.

Any other $600-$700 options with auto focus built in that anyone else could suggest for my research?

I love my old warhorse, the 18-200 3.5-5.6. Mine is the original VR I version and it was a great walkaround lens. I got mine lightly used for approx $670. There is now a VR II version out, maybe it's now in your price range.

I think the D7K line of cameras is you only choice. Everything else in the DX lineup of Nikon DSLRs is either older than D7000 or will not focus your motorless lenses. Other upgrade path will be a jump to FX in which case:

Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED will be practically usless unless you work in DX mode
Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm f/1.8D will work OK (FX lens)
Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G can be usable on FX cameras in FX mode with limitations (look at the end of this review on The Bhoblographer //www.thephoblographer.com/2013/06/06/long-term-review-nikon-35mm-f1-8-g/#.VK_Z_9XF8gs)
Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Macro should work OK (FX lens)

Note that the field of view on these lenses on FX cameras is different (no crop factor).

The D7000/D7100 are not FX cameras they are still DX

I don't have time to check the cameras right now, but one main difference that would be a total deal-breaker for me would be lack of external controls. Check what external controls you will have on these various cameras, I'd rather have a 3-4 year old body with full external control, than have to menu-dive through a new wiz-bang camera.

The D7000/D7100 are not FX cameras they are still DX

Of course they are. My extended comment was regarding an option to upgrade to FX as an alternative to D7000/D7100. Given that there are any FX cameras in that price range. Maybe used D600.

FYI. There are rumors on the Interwebs that Nikon D7200 is coming soon. It might be another option to upgrade to (if the price is right) or this may pull the prices of D7100 down.

I've heard the D7200 is rumored to release around August. The new price will probably be well out of my range and I don't know if I can wait that long for the price to drop on a new rig. Might purchase a D7100 refurb rig this weekend.

Anyone have any valid Adorama promo codes?

Bit the bullet and bought the refurbed D7100 from Adorama. I hope this was not a mistake and it gets me back into wanting to take pictures.

My first new camera in 6 years. The D70 is ancient and the only challenge I have won is with a camera phone which probably has more power than my D70 anyway so maybe this will help to change things for the better.

Sounds like you made a good call. It's always fun getting new stuff.

Good luck with it.

Don't forget that the 7100 suffers from the infamous banding problem.
I had a d7100 for one day and could notice this problem which is very annoying.
That's why I returned it to the shop.
Fortunately, I still had the d7000 which does NOT exhibit this problem.
I plan to keep it one or two more years. The d7000 is still, today, a solid performer !
