what do you think, does the B&W have more eye-appeal than the color?

It's hard to say, they are two different shots. Yes, the same subject but taken at different angles and distances from the looks of it. I like hem both, but I like the B&W's composition better and wonder how it would look in color.

In my opinion, the color is just breathtaking!!! What a shot! I can't say enough.

I think the B&W is nicer, both in the tones, dramatic sky, and because it's a closer shot of the subject, which is a bit sprawling in the color version. |

I have to agree with Neuferland. Both look good.

The B & W.
I like the lower perspective, which places your central subject, where it ought to be... in the sky. Fortunately, the sky itself provides both interest and contrast.
The colour shot strikes me more as a landscape with a mission in it, an incidental mission, at that. What makes for points and areas of interest in the b & w, has been subordinated to a landscape in the colour image, while impairing a good view of it.

I like both, but especially the B&W. The white tones are perfectly, like vanilla ice cream in color. But there is noise in the sky (mostly on the right), and little white specs all over the place. At least, clone out the specs. And at most, use NeatImage to remove the sky noise (not too much). :) Nice pics.

I like 'em both. That's a cool location... kinda' like a castle in the Southwest. The B&W version is a little too soft for my taste, but I like the tighter crop on that one. The color version might be a good candidate for some Heida-style sky burning (it'd be a shame to waste all that good cloud detail). Hope you don't mind...

Big improvement! Did you actually selectively burn the sky? Looks overall releveled? |

Both are beautiful in their own way. I like the color one for it's cripness but the road on the left sorta distracts from the composition. The dome is almost a heavenly white. The compostion of the b/w is great but it's a little soft and lacks the details of the color one even though it seems to be taken from a closer vantage point. The color one is my favorite and even better with scalvert's post processing. |

yeah! The sky looks pretty cool like that. Maybe I'll "Heida-fy" the one where the light rays come down to the Mission. (It looks pretty interesting, I was saving it for last...) Thanks for the suggestions and comments!

I think they are both fantastic photos. I like the tighter crop on the B&W image, but the colors in the other one are super. I'd like to see a color version of the B&W image.
Really good work David!

I like them both however to me the B & W shows a lot more drama.

No selective burning- this was a quickie. I shifted the levels midpoint to darken everything, then used the history brush to restore the lower half of the image and a few pixels of the sky. I cloned the sky back in right along the edge to hide the seam, boosted the overall saturation a bit, and desaturated the blues to make the lower cloud grayer. Took about 10 minutes. |

In this case I like the color better...but we are comparing apples and oranges. The two shots are different. The b/w lacks definition which may be brought about the use of curves. The Color, in this case, is complete. |

I would go for the B&W without a doubt. That´s what I usually do when not expressing some special colors. |

scalvert, I am not worthy. (Dropping to my knees and bowing). Ten minutes, huh? I think I gotta get some PhotoShop classes under my belt. (You KNOW I spent a lot more time than that to get what you improved so quickly!) |

This took 5-plus minutes including downloading your photo, launching Photoshop, and uploading the adjusted version : )
As usual (for me), I first tried one Curve on the RGB channel to get more punch and detail in the sky, and to emphasize the two brighter pieces of the building (dome and roofline on the far right) ... I didn't check for objectionable color shifts (I don't see them well anyway) but concentrated on tone/contrast. Colors can be corrected by use of Curves or Levels on the individual color channels as necessary.
It took longer to write the post than work on the photo : )
