Then there should be a Don't vote on this picture button!

There is a don't vote button, you just skip the pic and never enter a vote.

No your wrong there if you do it keeps poping up.

That doesn't mean you can't keep skipping it. Yes, it may be annoying to have it keep coming back but there is a solution.

So you want this site to be annoying???
I would hate for this site to become annoying!

My response earlier was entirely serious. It was my thought process and motivation for voting on that image. Just because you don't think it is on topic, does not mean it is not on topic. If you don't get it, you don't get it. It doesn't mean it should be removed, just that it doesn't work for you.

The grey square was entirely on topic for me. In fact, it was easily the most on topic, wittily self-referential to this challenge site, which can easily be seen as a sport and far and away the most thought provoking.

Just because you didn't get it, doesn't mean there is nothing to get.

Some context for my comments and some more.

It might also be worth considering Robert Ryman as well, if you are interested, or Ad Reinhardt

To quote Often I'm surprised and overwhelmed by how beautiful they are. I love Reinhardt's black paintings more, probably, than any other art work that I've come across, and I think he meant them to be contentless. So he really wanted them to be nothing. So what happens when... You know, nobody wants to accept that something is about nothing, or that art is only about art. So once you say that, then people inevitably start to relate these paintings to something, or try to make them metaphysical, try to relate them to something outside of the painting somehow. You don't know what you're looking at. And so they don't look like anything.

The thing that makes Reinhardt interesting to me is that he was deadly serious and it was all a big joke at the same time. You know, you don't get the humor in the black paintings. But to me, they're really funny because they're exactly that kind of humor, that kind of deadpan humor, that's not knee-slapping humor, but because it isn't, it's sort of more funny to me. I'm laughing inside my brain.

I didn't say that. You should be voting on all entries. This is just an acception. How does the system know you want to bypass a particular image indefinately?

your all being silly! It was a joke meant to cause a reaction! It's annoying to some, funny to others. I doubt anyone will do it again.

This is what I think about it:

Had I voted, I would have quickly fired off a 1 for the gray box and moved on to the next image. Given the perfectly flat and color-matched gray tone, I'd question whether this is even a photo (without the benefit of photographer's comments to read during voting).

On the other hand, I can see Gordon's point of view, too. The gray box can be interpreted as calling attention to the Challenge itself as a team sport- an interesting notion. While both are valid opinions, I'd bet that the vast majority of high votes came from either cynical folks who thought it was funny or people trying to foil a brown ribbon attempt.

I eagerly await his reasons for posting.
Paul.
Congrats to all those who entered, some great shots, even the sunset pic.

Read the rules - if it does not violate the rules, it will not be DQd. Not fitting the challenge will (should) cause low votes, but is not a reason to be DQd

I hate the most brown ribbon attempts.

So I voted 10 on both the The Square and the sunset.

But I really would like to see no photos like that in the competitons and if they would appear that the SC would remove them from the competition.

Ed (e301), already, has taken pains to consider Gabriel's "Competion" without prejudice, pointing his flashlight in the dark.

Gordon argues compassionately for an aspect and genre of art beleaguered by much ignorance and, consequently, resistence. He has made an effort to substantiate his argument by linking to information relevant to an appreciation of the kind of work under discussion. He also observes the effect of Gabriel's particular image in the specific context of this site, again, defining a range of charge.

Gabriels own comments are not without wit and interest either.

In light of such efforts, I think the best we can do is to read carefully, consider sincerely and weigh our responses before venting any more unconsidered opinions.

Should I follow this by a question mark?
09/22/2004 12:51:50 PM · #62
If the SC have to start removing photos for not meeting the challenge, this would be a very slippery road. Where would you draw the line? Some are obvious, many are not. Can you imagine how much time this would take? Loads of photos would have to be voted on... some of them meeting the challenge controversially. How about shots that have been shoehorned in by a good title? Many shots use the challenge topic in a creative way, and do not fit in an obvious 'black and white' way. What a can of worms this would become.
09/22/2004 01:18:20 PM · #63
Obviously the SC would only DQ pictures that would be no doubt about like the two. If it wasn't obvious then it would stay in the competition.

This is actually two seperate though much alike issus:
Sunset picture:
- enter by mistke got DQ requsets
- owner asked for it to be removed. SC said no to his request.

Gray square:
User trying for brown ribbon or provokeing other user by entering a picture that can be done from any picture by changeing it in PS within basic editing rules.
But it was probably done by using the fill tool and when asked for original you could send in any picture taken within the dates.

Why allow this nonsense to be part of this site???
I say no to this!

SC says rules are rules...but they where made and can be changed.

Indeed.

I think that high scores given to shots that are so clearly out of challenge that there is no room for interpretation makes the idea of giving notes, mute.

For the love of all things holy please stop Mass quoting! @_@

My intent was in no way to upset people. It was a pure experiment targeted to discover photographers (ie this website voters) reactions. I am pleased by the results because some of the comments allowed me to learn things, and to think that sometimes we could/should have a different way to look at things.

Anyway, if you do not like this, just ignore it. This is just a picture, no harm has been done.

btw: it was done by following the rules, without using any fill tool. Experimentation doesn't mean that I do not respect this site rules, otherwise why would I have registered?
