Hmm only last possible thing I can think of is the bag o' rice solution...perhaps something is sticking just enough to eff up the AF and that it is an easy fix. Otherwise, sorry, can't think of anything else :-(

Is there a camera shop close by where you can try a new 50mm lens on your camera? That way you will know if it is your lens or the camera.

They'll tell you to take it to the store where you bought it from with all the paperwork, original packaging etc. and unless you bought the extended warranty (which I think only applies to camera bodies but may also go to lenses) and they'll ding you $40 or so to send it in, each way.

Oh, and once it gets to Nikon...welll...maybe you'll get it back in two weeks...I do hope for your sake that it is an easily fixable problem!

Maybe see if there is a reputable camera repair store around? I plan to take the ol' warhorse in to get the staff at just such a store to take a look at it and see if they can fix it. I bought the 18-200 used so I don't have a warranty. If they can fix it, it'll probably cost a lot less than the hassle of shipping it in to Nikon, not to mention the time and expense of getting it fixed by Nikon.

hmm,,, I see you mentioned the AF Zoom-Nikkor 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 D focus fine, the problem will likely be the lens

I took a few shots of my camera and an AF-D lens

sorry if any of this sounds dumb ...

the lever moves the AF screw in the lens , shown here, it has slot indentation

you can see if ti works, the "screw" will turn when you move the focus ring on the lens, try it
if it doesn't turn there is your problem

the rest of the checks are on the camera body

I'll check the AF selector in the camera is set to AF

when the selector is moved a small lever/screwdriver moves in /out in the mount
with the lever set to AF it will be protruding, it is shown right in the center of the photo

when set to MF it retracts into the body

when mounting the lens often the screw and the lever on the camera don't match, you'll here a click when the AF motor on the camera starts turning

this should give you a number of things to check, if anything is wrong then you at least know if it is the lens or camera

Armondo...thank you very much for helping...

Rick (husband) and I cked it all out. It appears that all is functioning fine...but

He thinks the gears need to lubricated or it's dirty??? It's pretty hard to rotate/turn manually (as compared to my other lens) and it's always been "tight". Is there anyway to lubricate the lens? It's so tight in the turning that Rick said to take the lens off my camera so I don't burn/stress anything on the camera.

Thoughts...

Someone needs to strip it down, clean it, and lube it. It won't be a full stripdown, the glass will stay intact in the barrel etc. If your camera store has a competent tech, he can do it.

Rick is quite handy and has taken apart and fixed many, many things...you think he could do it???

True story - Rick fell coming out of our camper years and years ago and jammed the lens into our VHS (there a hint how long ago) recorder, didn't break it just jammed it in. Well, one evening I came home and found him with the skeleton of our VHS recorder and about 1 million parts and screws in the bottom of a box...he said that he could fix it IF the dealer here would just sell him the part, they wouldn't...so he put it all back together and all I could think about was there goes our $1,200 video camera...

Good News...Bad News....

I didn't get to talk to technician today they are in their shops (I know of 3 now) Tue - Sat. But my husband did take the lens apart and found 2 cracks on the outer housing of the lens. I don't remember dropping it. BUT about 2 months of go I was trying to use my reversing ring and it got stuck on the lens...we had a hard time getting it off...we think that's when it cracked...sigh

Good News...

As of now it's working fine since he took it apart (I'm sure it's temporary)...replacement...I can find them online for around $197 (NEW). Do I want something different??? I don't know...maybe...thoughts?

I'll get the quote, but I've been told roughly $200 and for that amount I can get a new one and still use the old one as a manual. That's why I'm thinking about getting the Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 60mm f2.8D instead...I love what I've been seeing here on the site for those that have it...but that's for later...I'm not going to be doing this for awhile yet.

$200 ? ... right

I wouldn't send it either

you have listed a vivitar macro ... you don't like it ?

for a fast prime have you considered the 35mm f1.8 AFS? it's about $200 last time I saw

and for manual focus , nothing beats the feel of a MF lens, this AFD lenses are way to easy to move, there is no damping on the focusing ring once they are set to manual

I recently got a 50mm f1.8 ais used lens for like $70 dlls

it will work on your 7000, the AF indicator plus AF points helps confirm when things are in focus it even tells you what direction to turn the MF ring to get in focus, quite awesome, it will do the same with your current 50 f1.4 afd, just the feel is different.

I own this lens....

Vivitar MF Macro 55mm 1:2:8 f/2.8 for Nikon

Only one other person on the site owns it (or lists it)...I love, love, love this lens it has a beautiful 1:1 ratio and has served me well...super sharp.

My 50mm 1.4 I really liked because it "was" auto so I used it when doing bees n such as you need to be able to follow a moving fast object. Not an easy feat with a manual lens...

I saw a 60mm 2.8 for $212 on amazon last night, that price is because they've come out with a newer model...but I'll continue to look...ebay is good too.
