In my personal opinion, I think the Oly 8080 is currently the best of the crop out there. But there's a LOT of great P&S cameras available, so listen to zeuszen! |

My sister just got her Pentax Optio S4i. The quality is amazing and it's tiny enough to fit in an altoids tin (a good thing for a p&s - small size). The quality is really really great and the camera is just so super cool!!!!

I've seen the Canon S1 as low as $316 now! Great all around camera, but I wish it was 5mp.

Depends on your needs, budget and the day you ask. Canon, Olympus and Minolta all just announce new models, so the "best" might be one of those. I'm partial to the Canon PowerShot series, but determined photographers have been known to drag a good shot out of a Nikon, Fuji, Olympus or Sony model. Probably just luck. ;-) |

As long as it isn't the Kodak DX4530..
piece of junk that was ;)
the 6440 though.. great camera. Actually, had I bought the 6440.. I don't know that I would have taken it back and gotten the S7000.. which I love.. so.. it's good that I got the 4530..
and now.. I'm missing the point of the whole thread and rambling.

Well, I dunno about Kodak in the digital era, but for point and shoots I've had experience with both Sony and Canon, and Canon has the best quality for sure, but it depends on if you just want snapshots. Cause the Canon A80 which is a superior p&s will run you about $600CND but you can get a decent Sony p&s for about $300 - and it'll be super small. You can also get the Canon Digital Elph series but again they're more pricey - but you get what you pay for. Sony, I've found, only works great for photos you don't want to enlarge.

As a P&S I've been pretty happy with the Olympus ... it's even still working after almost 4 years. Right now, I'd consider the Stylus 400 (or similar), as it comes in a water-resistant case which would allow you to use it in bad weather (but not underwater).
I was lately considering the Canon A-series (A-70, A-80, etc.) since they have fully-manual capabilities in addition to being a compact P&S, but ended up with the S1 IS for the long zoom. |

Good! I'm really glad you do :) Actually, it was decent for what it was, that's for sure. I just needed more control :)

My two cents...stay away from the Oly's that support xD Picture cards only. I can get 1G of Compact Flash for half the price my wife can get a 512M xD Picture Card. Newegg Price for 512M xD $153.00 (not even the one that does panorama). Something to keep in mind. |
