Well, I've been a big fan of my Panasonic FZ10... 35-440mm equivalent Leica lens, Image Stabilisation, etc. IMO, no other non-DSLR has come close. But check out this Nikon that has just been announced... 10x zoom, AND image stabilisation! Only downer is that the maximum aperture at the tele end is F4.9, whereas Panasonic feature F2.8 throughout the zoom range on all their cameras. However, I think this will be an excellent camera which will be very competitive in the area of big zoom prosumers. 8 Megapixels as well! It remains to be seen what the fringing and noise will be like, but this is a camera to keep your eye on.
Oops, here's the link and an early review:

I have the 8700 (very close to the same thing) and I love it...

There are a couple of really nice prosumers coming out, and Photokina might have even more hiding within it.. (we'll have to see). However, the S7000 that I have is a decent enough prosumer that as much as I'm in love with some of the new ones, the only way to go for me from here, is DSLR..

Grass is always greener isn't it?

They also announced a light 3x TC for the 8800 (8400? not sure what to call it???)

hello.... 350MM X 3 = 1050mm of reach. Hope that VR works good cause that is LONGGGGGG reach

8800 is update of 5700 but with 10x lens. 8400 is update of my camera. The Phase Fresnel converter seems to be only for the 8400. The Extra-low Dispersion converter is for the 8800, but haven't seen anything to say what multiple it is.

And the price is around that of the D70 and lens. Now, that's the interesting bit.

Interesting bit to me is the Image Stabilisation. Even when I own a DSLR, it's still going to be good to carry around a prosumer with an all-purpose lens.

Discovered that the tele for the 8800 is 'only' a 2x :-)

And absolutely agree with your point Bob. I may be getting a Fuji 340 tomorrow precisely because I can then carry it absolutely everywhere with me. Outside a bar on Upper Street this evening there was a nad old woman sitting on a sofa, reading a book ... in the middle of the pavement. My camera? Tucked up nicely at home :-(

i said the same thing. i have a fuji s602, which is a fantastic camera... but after using my d70, i just can't deal with the limitations on the 602. so even tho i say i'd carry it around as an all-purpose... i don't :) ... my d70 with the 18-70 or with a 50mm 1.8, is my "walk-around" setup
