It doesn't need to be "active", it's just there to be opened up. |

If I have a BG Copy it shows up...
But if I have a (Cntrl+alt+shift+E = Layer 1) it's not active...ish |

Do you have to be in 8-bit mode? |

Cntrl+alt+shift+E does all that for you: it places on top a new composite layer of all the visible layers in the image. Leaving the previous layers unaltered. |
awesome!!!! tried it just now and that is pretty slick! I love learning like this |

Can somebody help me. I am a little slow. I am trying this for the first time, and I was trying to follow the instructions posted earlier:

These instructions are for PS CS3 but may very well work for other versions of PS and maybe for other software.
Open the image you want to edit and make sure the layers palette is visible.
Duplicate the background layer
From the edit menu, choose transform and select flip horizontal
Change the blending mode of the layer to difference... |
When I change the layer to "Difference" the image goes all black. What am I doing wrong? |

The different blending modes produce different results. You really have to experiment to find out what works best for that particular image. |

I wonder if the 2nd layer really did flip. Try flip horizon & then flip again Vertical.
Black means it was 2 layers the same, usually, in other words no difference.
Try another blending choice.

Mark that happened to me also I'm using elements 11. I went to IMAGE,ROTATE,FLIP LAYER HORIZONTAL then vertical ans so on.
The problem was the option for FLIP HORIZONTAL I had to use the one that said FLIP LAYER HORIZONTAL. |

I just want to point out that I posted that absolutely useless help on purpose to alleviate Mark of the burden of feeling "a little slow." |

I learned today that if you click on the blending mode with your mouse then start using the dial you can "dial through" your choices.
Mark...I did all kinds of stuff...
sometimes if it was getting to dark I'd add a Brighten, usually using AUTO...or curves...or whatever... |

You may have to try a different mode.. I noticed when I did certain modes, it would make it black as well.. see if that works :-)) |
