its not like this is an epidemic, i may have only gotten 2 or 3 pms out of the vast number of critiques ive given. its far less than 1%.

Mike - Sorry, but I'm missing your point in response and how it's related to my comment.

I, like you, have rarely had a negative PM in response to a comment made(only a handful over the years) ... and I rarely hold back on my thoughts. I have, however, over the years noticed some (granted, also a small number) of DPC users that fail to mark comments helpful if they're the slightest bit south of being positive. Those are the users, IMO, that would not allow comments to be made during the challenge, but look for comments after voting if they scored well.

Just an observation ... and trying to make light of the scenario a bit.

If a photo is that "bad" then the person should have to justify it with something other than "I really hate this". Granted, there are some truly bad photos. But when photos are clearly well lit, composed, shot and post-processed, there's no reason anyone should be tossing scores like that around other than to knock others' scores down in hopes of promoting their own shots.

[snip]
Or am I missing something?

Anyway, if we're making requests here, I'll tack mine onto nygold's and say that commenting and critques should be mandatory when posting scores at the extremes - or at least at the extreme lows. If it sucks, tell them why and what they could have done to make it better.

I would challenge all the "comments should be required" crowd to try 100% commenting for themselves.

Sometimes technical perfection sucks all the life out of a photo. We've all seen a lot of technically perfect photos--with today's technology that's not much of a challenge--but we see far fewer photos that have achieved artistic perfection. That's a personal thing, & far more challenging. And far more desirable. IMHO.

Mature content? I thought there might have been a nekid pic in here. LOL

it wasn't in response, i hit quote on accident.

btw, i never mark comments as helpful and i may have the thickest skin on this site. :P

I always mark the comment helpful, I feel it encourages future comments and atleast lets the person know you've read their comment.

disagree. So im not fond of the idea of being forced to tell every 1,2,3,etc why i don't like it. I don't like your image for whatever reason, if i tell you why you probably arent going to like it mainly because i perceived some lack of effort of I misunderstood your intent, all of which isnt going to sit well at all with the photographer.

I'm with Mike on this, the day Iam forced to explain my vote is the day I leave.

I shall now make another "mature" comment--LOL.

But seriously, I find that voting is one thing & commenting is something else, using a different thought process. For me they are separate activities. So I'm mystified by the idea that the comment explains the vote. Not for me, it doesn't!

I dislike low votes without explanation as much as anyone. But life is full of unanswered questions. Why should DPC be any different. Get over it. That being said, any attempt at forcing people to do anything, especially on a site that is mostly for fun, will fail. If people have to justify their votes, they just won't vote. And people who do not want comments/critiques should not enter a challenge. And I would wager that the vast majority of participants welcome any sort of feedback.

There is a segment of the populace who will find offence everywhere they look. Unless it is a personal attack ("I know this is tanguera's and you SUCK"), most comments, even if they are how the commenter would change/process the image, are meant to be helpful and should be taken in that spirit.

+1 Love your outlook and thoughts on this :-))

My favorite comments are the ones where someone thinks my photograph was made by someone else (usually a talented photographer). It's a bit humorous, involves a "feel-good" moment, and sends me looking to the other photographer's site to see what he/she does (which is a "learning" moment). It doesn't happen often, but is not entirely unheard of.
