May I please have a critique of this texture picture?
Please on your honor don't look at the rest of the pictures till after the vote?

Please bear in mind that I don't actually know what I'm talking about... But...
I looked at this a while and basically liked it. But something bothered me... I asked my wife, she said it was "Nice, but uninteresting"... After staring at it a bit, I took a book and did a poor man's crop, taking out the top bar completely... My wife happened to see and said " Now THAT's better"...
Unfortunately although I liked it better without that top bar, for the life of me I can't say why. Except that the white spot in the upper left bothered me a little. |

Hey aelith: The "silk" doesn't really pop out. Have to look for it. Everything else stands out - the rust of the metal, the wood... Probably would've given it a 4 or 5 off hand. ;0)

I really like the colors...the shadows and textures are nice too. The spider web doesn't really jump out at me in this...so I'd have to say the title 'silk' is off. The biggest problem to my eye is the composition...it's just really off to me. I have no idea why...so I could be very wrong. I think maybe if you panned out and concentrated on the nice lines, shadows and textures, you'd have a photo that appealed more to me. I'd give it a 6...great potential but significant compositional flaw...to me. :) |

Beth, was the title referring to the spider webs? If so, they appear too faint on my screen. (Did I miss something?) Myqyl is right, and the upper bar doesn't help. Also, I think I see a spider below the second bar (silk creator, right?) She appears shadowed and difficult to distinguish. My suggestions: try side lighting the web brightly, so it reflects and shows up more. Or, (might be considered cruel by some) mist the web with a water spray bottle, the water will hang onto the web, drawing more attention to it, but try not to be too mean to the spider, it's just trying to earn a living. Or a polarizing filter might do more to "bring out the web" in the shot. Does that help? Good luck!

Thanks all. Now I know entering this one would not have made any difference in my score.
Yes,the poopdrop was bother but the only solution was spot editing. thanks for the tip on using a water spray. The fact that the web didn't stand out is why I changed my mind on entering it. That the composition is topheavy I had not seen. thanks. I don't have a way to control the light yet. This was definitly one of those time of day shots. It's also a crop of a larger picture.
I really appreciate this as I have so much seeing to learn. |

If I had to say why, I think it's because it gave the 2nd bar some space to "breathe". I like the 2 bars, but I would have moved the camera up a bit to add a little wood to the composition above the top bar at the expense of a little of the wood at the bottom of the shot.
