Great maps. Dumb to show them as a video

I feel bad for the countries that England didn't try to invade.

... and why the hell is the coach of Rutgers getting all that money?

I agree, it's dumb to show them as a video.

[Soapbox]
I took a 1 year course in GIS (Geographic Information Systems), and maps like some of these drive me bonkers. I'm certainly no pro, but I know enough to not take maps and charts at face value. Even less so in a video like this, because there's zero time to actually look at any of the maps to understand them. It's designed to make you just go, "OMG, wow!" at what seems like astonishing straight-forward facts. The data may be accurate, but data is easily spun by people trying to make a point. There's so much that can be manipulated/skewed.

For instance, the McDonald's map. They're doing exactly what they say they're doing by highlighting the countries that have McDonald's. Red sure is a grabbing color. Yes, it makes sense for the subject matter, but it is still a color that invokes emotion. It also highlights the whole country, which is exactly what it said it was doing, but that's really misleading. It makes you think, "Gee, there's a zillion McDonald's, and everyone eats there!" How many do you think there are in Northern Russia or Northern Canada? However, if you actually have access to the numbers, it's not that impressive (or it's impressive for different reasons). A fact like "How many countries have McDonald's" is more fair to the viewers as a list rather than a map, IMO. If you wanted to show me a density map of McDonalds' with a normalized population figure, that might be interesting.

//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_with_McDonald%27s_restaurants

The donors of foreign aid map is another example. What are the numbers used? Is it a straight up dollar amount or is that dollar amount normalized in any way? The map looks completely different if you go by a percentage of the country's gross national income. If Luxembourg would have made this map, it would have looked completely different. But since they didn't, "America, fuck yeah!"

//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_governments_by_development_aid

Some questions to ask I ask myself before I go, "OMG, wow!"
Who is publishing this map?
What are the actual numbers?
What is the map projection?
What influences the data? (population density, etc)

A much more fair way of presenting the maps. They have links to their sources even. How bouts that...

Turns out that my household consumption of coffee is about 25x the national average. That's surprising.
