PhotographyLife.com is reporting that Nikon has finally caved and will fix D600's for free AND Nikon will pay shipping charges.
It took a class-action lawsuit to get the ball rolling but the ball has rolled.

Filled out form...boxed and ready to be taken to UPS.
Remember everyone to take all accessories off/out of your camera, including the battery.
Now the question is: what is the service they will perform? Replace the shutter? Or just a cleaning. Hopefully, the former!

The solution: Nikon is making available to all owners of D600 cameras (even if Nikon̢۪s product warranty has expired) this customer-service measure, which includes the inspection, cleaning and replacement of the shutter assembly and related parts of your camera

Maybe this is an official announcement but Nikon already did it. They changed my shutter mechanism at the beginning of February. |

And as I recall, you said it didn't help? Or am I remembering that wrong and it was something else with your camera? |

Doesn't surprise me it took a class action for Nikon to do right. Bought binoculars from them not too long ago, and the center wheel that focuses them broke. Under warranty, a $2 part and they refused to fix them without me paying for the repair. Worst customer service I've ever dealt with. Will never buy anything with Nikon on it ever again. |

We'll soon see...(or maybe not too soon). I just dropped mine off at UPS. Let's see how long it takes, how good they are at communicating, and most importantly, what comes back to me!

No there was another problem - the viewfinder display didn't work.
Now the camera works much better even if I'm not sure that the problem completely disappeared. |

Just got notice of a mailing label for shippoing this back to me... (unless it's my lens coming back already.)
Two weeks isn't bad turnaround given I shipped it in as soon as they announced the recall. |

Two week turnaround is pretty good. Hopefully you'll have a better-than-new D600 :) |

As for me, mine seems to be ok, or at least much better than before.
I shot a lot of time lapse sequences and not huge problems. |

Mine came back this week...clean!
Glad to see Nikon finally did something about it.
And note I saw a NEW D600 on sale on the web yesterday for $1495 or so! Quite a steal, especially with the problem solved! |

So far so good! No oil in these hills.
I want to also add, having been mostly using my D7100 lately, that the D600 sensor totally rocks (especially in comparison)! The D7100 sensor was a step backwards for shadow recovery.
Check out these test captures from a shoot yesterday. We were testing the lights. The Alien Bee 800 was set to manual, lowest setting.
As shot, on manual:
Lightroom Auto Adjust, +5 Stops!!!!!!!!! No Noise Reduction.
100% crop from above. Again, no Noise Reduction.
Also, shot all day with the 24-70 F2.8. This has become my favorite FF lens! |

Not to derail the thread, but how do you find the D7100 for highlight recovery? |

With low light conditions and for shadows recovery D600 is super, I agree.
As for me, the problem of dust on the sensor is partially solved - much better than before but still I have to clean it much more often than my D7000. But in many ways I love this camera. |

It's fine for highlight recovery, ok but not great for shadows. You tend to get a green cast, and even some banding in the shadows. |
