Everybody likes a test now and then.
this is a good one from the Pew Research Center to test your
science knowledge. (I got 12 of 13 - bet you can do better.)

You scored better than 93% of the public and the same as 7% (with 13/13)

Kind of had to guess at what "fracking" was, though.

13 of 13! Whooot!

It scares me that only 20% of people know the most common gas in the atmosphere.

13 of 13. However, it was a bit too easy. I suspect an ulterior motive to the quiz. Might be related to the last question about fracking, which was a bit out of character with the rest of the quiz. Heads up! The Keystone pipeline and a public relations effort to improve the public's opinion on fracking may be in play.

This isn's the quiz that the statistics came from. Just a sample of some of the questions that were on the actual quiz.

I got em all right but that curve of the answer is bothering :-/

Ditto that. It seemed more like, "Are you smarter than a 5th grader?"

OK, I actually thought there might be at least a couple or three questions that required a bit of thought, LOL. I know that my viewpoint is skewed because I have a technical background, but those questions really are grade school material. The distribution of number of correct answers is, frankly, just frightening.

agreed.

Someone stop the planet, I want to get off.... ;)

13 of 13, good. To easy.

13 of 13 also. I guess we are the elite here :-) I didn't even have to hesitate for any of those questions.

I'm in the 80% majority. :(

Ditto. It's the only one I missed.

What exactly scares you about that figure, Cory? I'm sure in school it was mentioned at some point briefly in general science, but I never took Chemistry. I don't know what any of that crap is, heh.

Well, I got 12 out of 13 correct whis is better than I thought I'd do.. Although, had I not had the multiple choice option, I probably would've gotten more of them incorrect... Sigh.

I guess if nothing else I at least have the ability to rationalize the answers and make a mostly educated guess.

One of two things on the planet we can't do without, and 80% of Americans don't know what it's composed of? I'd call that scary too.

That was the easiest test ever.

My 13 y.o. son got a perfect score.

It's pretty basic stuff - I mean, you're literally submerged in it all of your life - how would you not want to know (everyone taking that test should have had internet access, so it's not like a fast google search wouldn't reveal that information)..

I guess it scares me because it tells me that people aren't even aware of some of the most basic information, and yet these same people are allowed to VOTE of all things, and are allowed to hold office, be police officers, medics, etc.

The fact is that this test was incredibly low-level in terms of basic science knowledge, and overall people have done badly on it, but for 80% to fail to know what they're sucking in all day long is astonishingly egregious. (no offense intended Larry, honesty is another quality people lack, and you seem to have that in good supply)

I got 13/13, but that was the one question I had to think about. I knew what fracking is, because it's been in the news so much lately. The overall composition of the atmosphere...not so much.

I think people conflate (pun intended) "most" with "most important" ... they know we need oxygen, and that there's currently too much carbon dioxide, but we almost never have cause to mention the (nostly) inert _________ (not including spoilers here!) ...

FWIW using my old browser (IE 6) I was able to score a perfect 0/13 as it failed to record any of my (correct) answers.

"Literally submerged in it all of your life"
That might be true, but there's a whole heck of a lot of stuff we're submerged in our whole lives that few people know about. Just consider yourself one of the privileged few that know about this one particular thing.

"Google search"
That would have been cheating.

"These people are allowed to VOTE, hold office, be police officers, medics, etc"
Not knowing this one thing makes someone an incompetent moron? Gosh, thanks Cory.

To be honest, I've already dismissed the answer to the question again, because I don't give enough of a shit to retain it. Pip, pip, cheerios! :)

By Google search, I meant that they weren't restricted in their access to knowledge.
What's really worrisome is that probably 90% of the respondents won't even bother to google the right answers and find out WHY they were wrong.

Nope, not knowing that one thing is a symptom of not being hungry for knowledge. And yes, I do think those who don't know the rough composition of the atmosphere shouldn't really be making any decisions about how we should manage things.

Side question: What's the link between fracking and birthday parties?
