Long story short: In order to save money, my wife asks for samples of supplements. She ordered a sample but failed to read the fine print. When she was accepted it said they would charge her 100 bucks every month until she cancels. Unfortunately, she can't find the link to cancel anything. The 3rd party website she was able to email but was told to deal with the company directly. There was an email address but no actual website. I told her to call the CC company and tell them not accept any charges from company X or anywhere outside of our region. The CC company said they couldn't do that.
Since it's the end of the year and not a lot is open there's little we can do. I told her that anything that gets ordered that we never ordered we'll charge it back. As far as I know that's fine...but I've never had to actually do this. There could also be a misunderstanding and the company could be real but more a smaller company working out of a smaller office and with New Year's being the biggest holidays, nobody is around.
Still, any advice on what I should do now while things are still fresh? |

Sounds fishy. Have her retrace her steps to find the original offer. Do a web search for the company. |

Yep, I was thinking the same thing.

Yep, cancel the card, or report it as stolen. That is the most effective way with the least hassle. |

Canceling the card will NOT likely get rid of the recurring charges... and in fact you might pay far more in fees. |

If the card is cancelled then the company will have to call the customer to obtain a new payment method. At this point the customer can request cancelation of their membership. Since the company does not have contact information this is a good way to move forward. |

Make sure the card is actually *cancelled* and no new charges can be accepted. I cancelled a card once, and the card company reopened the account every time there was a new charge. Unfortunately, in the meantime, I had moved, so I didn't know about the new charges until I was trying to get a home loan.
I'd call the card company, tell them that your card is being used fraudulently, and *ask* them what to do. If pressed, I'm sure they can come up with something.

Right... if you read the fine print... they all have that further charges especially recurring ones will still be charged. Now whether they will come after you or stop the merchant is debatable... but ignoring it is not likely to result in a good outcome. |

With your financial institution or credit card company, use the term "Hot Card". Time is of the essence.
Hot Card = A debit or credit card that may not be used because it has been reported lost or stolen. If a thief (or anyone else) attempts to use a hot card, the transaction will be declined.
If a card is simply "cancelled", a recurring charge could possibly still go through, if an agreement between the cardholder and the merchant was made.

Update (And maybe some clarifications):
The company (Supplement company) hasn't charged the card yet. My wife signed up for samples that would charge 3 dollars for samples. After that, if she wants monthly supplies they would charge her monthly. She would then have 24 days to cancel (After the samples arrive). This was not in the initial sign up and only after in the follow up email was this stipulated. She decided to cancel right away, she would be fine paying for the samples just not being signed into a monthly plan. Phone call was unanswered (A Tokyo number) and there was also a link to a number in Hong Kong which wasn't picking up either.
She did more digging around and found that several people had trouble canceling orders. The credit card company said that until a charge was made there wasn't anything they could do. This is VISA from one of the major banks. I'm going to try talking to them after posting this. It's the holidays...not sure what to expect. It's a pain in the arse to cancel a card and get a new one.
I'll let you know what the card company says. I also sent email in English to the company hoping that they understand that this won't be happening to us. |

I don't know how it is in Japan, but here in the US, if you don't actually order something but a company ships it anyway, it's yours to keep. Some less reputable companies would ship things to people and then try billing them for it, refusing returns etc. |
