Shoot your subject so that it appears it's in front of a black background. In your notes, include a photo of your setup. Advanced editing.

| Thoughts: Does the background have to be material? (as in physically there?) or can it be a result of a narrow aperature with a specific lighting setup resulting in no BG being "picked up" in the shot? |

This is how I do all my black background shots. Flash + high sync speed + low ISO + smallish aperture. |

you could. if you really wanted to - use almost anything as a black background. Depends on how well you control the light around your subject. Ofc something dark makes things easier a bit..
I m sure theres a few articles on strobist about this

| I was just asking for the sake of the challenge, if there's a preference for a physical background to be present that is black in color, or if this is intended to be a study-of-sorts on said technique. |

| In my mind, it's a study-of-sorts on said technique. A black velvet background is a place to start, but it's not all there is. So it could be an actual black BG or a black BG created by a high dynamic range and not much light on the BG. It's all fun. |
