It would be nice to have people enter what lens they used for shots along with ISO, shutter and aperture. Also, that means on the search screen, we could see lots of samples of a lens we were interested in buying (something I can do, for example, on PhotoSIG; but when implemented, this site could perhaps do a better job of providing a standard list of lenses--people enter their own on psig and there's too many "near misses") |

i try to enter the lense specs on all my posts here. specific to the lense make, model, series, and speed, whether it was handheld, cropped, and what not.
i don't always like to enter the shot specs - as sometimes it's a secret ;} - or in post-processing things are adjusted which may be misleading as to the original exposure.
i think the idea has been brought up in the past - i may have mentioned it myself actually.

I used to want to see that lens information also. It gets really tricky to 'evaluate' a lens from a challenge photo that has been post processed in various ways though. Cropping, sharpening, and other various post shot adjustments make it quite difficult to see the actual properties of the lens itself.

Yes, that's true. But you can at least see the potential! For example, I would never buy the Konica A2 based on the samples and test images from I see them on Steve's or DPReview. But I've seen some incredible shots by photographers using it on Luminous Landscape and another site (which I can't recall off of the top of my head.) Clearly postprocessing is important for some lenses.
Likewise, reading the SLR lens reviews, and seeing the samples at the extreme apertures and focal lengths makes me wonder why I just bought a DSLR. I can't afford (or justify) L glass. Nor would I want to carry it around. So I need a lens with "potential", even if it's not the best without some "help". |

I put this info in the Photographer's Comment box at the moment. It would be nice to have its own box too along with the camera info settings currently there.

I have to resurrect this...I would really love the lens info done up just like the camera info so it was databased and searchable...or are there just too many lenses to do this? |

After reading a similar post a while ago, I decided not to leave the details box empty when I submit it. Before that I didn't realize that some people might want to know. I did put the focal length of the lens and at what focal length was used. With my next entry I will put the full make/model of the lens + how it was used. |

It would be interesting to see how the same lens performs on different cameras, too.

I know this is an old thread but I wanted to see if anyone else was interested in including focal length in the photographic info.
It seems there is some groundswell and I as a novice would find it extremely helpful. |

I doubt there are as many lenses as there are cameras already in our camera database.
One thing that bugs me is when people put photos in the forums and ask for comments but the details are missing. People can do a better job of critiqueing your shot if they know aperture, ISO and shutter speed. Same goes for the lens used for interchangeable lens cameras. An example of where this info would be especially helpful is when talking about the relationship between aperture and depth of field, a concept that is sometimes difficult for beginners.

This comes up every few months. I, too, don't understand why there can't be an entry line to add in which lens was used. You could even free text it, so the admins didn't have to make a massive pull-down list (like with the aperture, speed, etc that we fill in already).
How about making this a topic to vote on??? See what kind of support is out there and lets do it! |

I agree - and a self-critique of the work would help as well - things the shooter likes about the photo(s), things they do not like, comments on composition, etc.

No need for a poll. This is already in the works and we're currently populating the database.

Outstanding!
After recently picking up a dSLR, I've been aching to see what lenses people are using.
Similarly, it would be nice to have an option for those using fixed-lens cameras, or dSLRs, to include the focal length that a particular shot was made at, if using a zoom lens. EXIF data usually carries this.
Also, it'd be great to have a "free-form" field for additional hardware used in the capture (teleconverters, filters, etc.).

Not that I have any lens, but I always look at the shots and would love to see what lens was used. It's a great idea.
Any news/updates on this? |
