I was out today when my wife spotted this little guy. He was just crawling and I picked him up and put him on the rock wall again. But then he went into a bizarre bent body "dance" swinging side to side in some agressive ritual. The big fake eye spots are amazing on this thing. I would have never thought there wass such a caterpillar in Connecticut.

This is not real is it?

I've seen some similar to those but green and black but I read that when they feel threatened they puff out their rear end so it looks like a snake head. Pretty crazy that one of them is in Connecticut.

Left this on the photo too, very nice!

: )

Looks like a kid's swimming pool "sea monster" toy. I wonder what hookah he was smoking out of ... those "eyes" look mighty dilated to me ...

Maybe you could try blurring the rock into waves ...

That's the weirdest thing I've ever seen! I did some Googling and found this page.

There are several pictures that resemble this caterpillar.

(1/3 down the page)

Tiger Swallowtail Caterpillar
(07/07/2004)

(4th from the bottom)

(8/14/2003) english grub

What do you think?

Cool find.

Awesome little guy. Did you keep him?

Thanks for all your comments and the species Identification. The "spicebush swallowtail caterpillar." Thank you Scalvert.

Just to let everyone know I didn't take this guy out of his natural habitat. I sort of feel bad for picking him up to put back on the rock but hell, I think it will live... and probably become a pretty beautiful butterfly.
