I love controversy for you learn from that and not become complacent in your views. I not complaining about the scores of the deer picture. I would have voted and commented much the same way. It is that snobbish word snapshot that seems too state in some people's vocabulary that certain pictures are inferior because they were not created but captured in time. At the turn of the 20th century a man named Eastman Kodak developed a camera that took snapshots and that helped get us to this point and time. So the word snapshot to me, means that you are taking old black and white pictures from a Square or Brownie camera with film that are deemed outdated, because there is a new or better way to take pictures of subjects. The word snapshot is used too loosely, somewhat like the spectrums of the contest titles. But we are learning and you have to learn to walk before you can run. |

Originally posted by Lisa: Don't feel bad. I made the same mistake this week. I think sometimes our own strong feelings impair our judgement on what an acceptable submission is. I submitted what I thought was the sweetest photo of my beloved, thread-bare and bally childhood 'teddy-frog' smugly smiling (under the symbollic light of love) because he knew that even though he was the ugliest thing on earth (even uglier in color), he was loved. The comments I'm getting contrast hilariously with my own perception.
*I hope this is a stuffed doll of some sort, cause if it's a cut-up person in a burlap sack and that's your defition of "loved" I'll be really scared :-)
*creepy, different, strange
*Very very strange shot -- what is it?
*this is almost disturbing after seeing a tool cd
Those are just the highlights. I'm honestly just laughing at myself for being so blinded by my own feelings of nostalgia. I'm also getting a kick out of the twisted things people must be thinking this poor little frog is. The comments reveal more about the viewer than the picture in this case. Just shrug it off and try again. The only thing that matters is that you like the picture. :-)

Velvet is texture and yes I could have done the picture better or done another one. I wanted to show a rare shot without a telephoto lens. Also I didn''t want to hang around and keep taking pictures of the deer to get the best shot. I was afraid I might spook them out into traffic. When you do a great shot and enter it you have clowns out there that are blind or need to have their monitor''s adjusted, or just plain ignorant votes of 1 or 2. So what does it matter if you enter a good or a bad picture? The deer picture is no worse than a child or pet picture showing off what we love and that is photography. It seems a week or so ago a long shot of a ram took first place. This sure-footed animal has no fear of heights but maybe the photographer would have if he were in the ram''s place looking down into the canyon
Lisa; This week I too went the risky route. I went WAAAAYYY out on a limb with (what I thought was) pure abstract texture. Nobody gets it and everyone wants to change the focus....Live and learn but, never take it to heart. That's Photography!! Syamjonimi

Well put Bobgaither..... I hope you will forgive us for taking this thread far away from its original purpose. It did seem a little like Friday, (just a small morsel of fun in us working folks life).

Originally posted by Journey: Oh, Lisa, please, don't take this personal. It was not AT ALL my intention to attack you or anybody else. But since this thread in the course of a day became a source of much entertainment and presumably much traffic, it might start a (bad) tendency to start discussing one's submission during voting.
Let me give an extreme example: Someone is very proud of his submission and receives some negative feedback. By Tuesday, she/he starts posting that people are just "not getting" the subtleties deliberately employed in his picture. I.e. voters are put on the spot and they may possibly revise their votes and comments in order to avoid coming across as dimwits. Fair? I don't think so.
Along the same lines .... I have seen two photos in the past two challenges on other sites. I believe that recognising the pic's and (in one case) knowing who the submission was from, has influenced the way that I voted. (I think that I was probably too critical to compensate for knowing who the photographer was)
In any case, a self imposed embargo on discussing or posting a submission elsewhere, on photos submitted to DPC would be fair to all who want to participate. |

George Eastman invented the name Kodak for his company because (I've heard) he liked words with the letter "K" in them. Remember he not only pretty invented roll film (allowing for handheld cameras), but that those original Brownies were factory-loaded -- yu'd send in the whole camera to the factory to have the film developed and a new roll loaded (just like those "new" disposables). |

Hmm ..
How about being spanked *with* kermie. . ? Nah, the threadbare thing would probably fall apart. LOL... I'm going to have to ponder this... :D

Alright, I'm going to have to nominate Magnetic for DPC mascot...he's far more frightening and twisted than Kerm.
Mag, I'm not sure you had taken this into consideration when you proposed the Kermi-spanking penalty. Do you realize that if this policy is adopted, in all fairness, it would have to apply to everyone who 'comes-out' early? I am not shipping my frog off to CA to spank Bobg or anyone else for that matter. Besides, now that I'm learning a bit more about how your mind works, I think that penalty may prove to be an incentive for you to reveal your submission early. You'd probably like a frog spanking. :P
Abandonning this thread for fear that I'll make myself look like even more of an idiot.

I wanted to coment on the Deer photo. As a hunter it is odd to see a buck with velvet on his antlers. Because they dont have velvet dureing hunting season. It was the very first thing I noticed. It meets the challenge. Non hunters might not see it that way.

Well, I don't think I would sleep with magnetic999 (or Kermi for that matter)not that that is a pre-qualification for the job of mascot. :)

KD -- it's cropped a little too tightly on either side, and the background is not good. Also, his color seems a little flat.

sheez...I can't resist this darn thread :P
Patella/KD, Oogie boogie does look just like Kermi...really really weird!
Mag, I didn't start with the kidnapping bit...that's all you!
Gotcha, you've been permanently etched in my mind as the guy who goes around saying "I would/wouldn't sleep with that." You crack me up.
Bobg, I forgot to say that I think it's great that you've decided to hunt with your camera instead of a gun. You get bonus points from me for that :)
Okay, I'm off to pick up my kid from school...maybe I'll be distracted from posting for a few hours (not likely). Could this thread be the reason for the low number of Corporate World submissions? Maybe we should go take some pictures or something.
