Stumbled across this on B and H

Link

and I'm thinking that I've gotten to the point where one of these may be beneficial, but I'm really short on cash. Obviously it's 55$ and you get what you pay for, but I guess what I'm asking is have any of you used this or have one like it and what are your thoughts... Thanks in advance.

looks like fun. absolutely no experience with this sort of thing, but now I am tempted. in the old days I always had a pen in one hand.

Yeah I can't help but think this thing would be sweet for layer masks and free selecting things...

I don't have that particular one, but have a tablet and like it. Check with Timfythetoo as he uses one almost exclusively. ;) Hope that helps!

I use the Wacom Bamboo.
Was very hesitant at first but now I can't edit without it. So much more control and easy to use.

Wacom Bamboo - and I like it - could live without it, but it's really pretty darn nice for spot editing.

This FYI is a slightly lower end model, but it really should do pretty much everything you'll 'need' it to do.

My girlfriend has one and really likes messing around with it. I use an older Intuos 3 that I picked up super cheap when the Intuos 4 came out. Mine is much larger than the one you listed, and it seems about right. Not too big, not too small. The small ones aren't so useful for photos in my opinion, nor are the large ones. The active area on mine is 6.5X8.5. The main difference between the Intuos and the Bamboo series is the pressure sensitivity levels and the way you can tilt the stylus. I seem to remember there also being something different about the eraser on the stylus as well. You'll also get more programmable buttons with the more expensive ones, as well as the option to use their mouse on the tablet itself.

I have an old Wacom Saphire that recently fell off the driver update table, and it is a great tool. Small enough to fit in a laptop bag and did everything I needed. I tried replacing it with an Intuos4, but found it overlarge and did not find that I used the bells and whistles (except the pressure sensitivity, that I miss) so I returned it and went back to the little one. At under $60 buy it try it and if it doesn't work for you, you can just resell it and get most of your money back.
One knock on this model is the " pen-on-paper feel" which means that the plastic surface is roughened. With the Intuos4 the surface was so rough that it ate the nibs on the pen at a massive rate, and users were trying workarounds like sanding down the surface with high grit cloth, or finding super hard aftermarket nibs. So that may be something to watch on this model.

As though it was requested.

as mentioned the active area seems small, any advice to how well it works in practice before i pull the trigger on this one?

are what are the difference between the one from b&H and the woot one?

Seemed small. Until I used it - then it seemed too big.

Very strange. But my advice is that you'll find the active area sufficiently large.

The bit I wish was larger is the area surrounding the active area - I'm thinking of creating a board to mount mine in so it's flush like paper would be.

ETA: The one on Woot is the Bamboo Capture, which is a step up from the Bamboo Splash
The one on Woot is refurbished (arguably, this is better than new)
The one on Woot is $5 less, and costs $5 to ship. Not sure what shipping is @ B&H.

The basic form of these tablets come in small medium large and extra large, stepping from a 4x6 working area to an 11x14. Some stuff is much easier on a big area but it is more in the land of typography or drawing than photography for me. I edit on a laptop so the trade off of working area for a smaller footprint was the decision point, the large Intuos was the size of my 17" laptop.

The Wacom Bamboo Splash & The Wacom Bamboo Capture are 2 in a line of 4 models (Comparison here) with more feature as you climb the ladder. The difference in price is about $25-$30 (when you add tax etc.) and you get a couple more programs with the Capture and a few more functions.

It did a month ago, but also, from the page:

"Everything you need to edit and transform your photos is in the box, including a full version of Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0, one of the most popular photo-editing solutions. For unique photo effects, try the easy-to-use photos filter in Nik Color Efex Pro 3.0 WE3. Or start drawing and sketching with Autodesk Sketchbook Express."
