Im New here but not to photography. I like to do macros of insects and other small creatures.
I might not write here often, I'm not very opinionated.
One question I have is how important is it to stick to the subject of the contest. If I had a great photo in the night sky contest but didn't have moon,stars or planets in it, how would people vote?

Welcome.
It's hard to answer your question everyone has a different way of voting.
BUT if the shot is that great you could alway submit it into the Free Study challenge. |

that's up to the voters, you wont formally be DQ'd for not following the subject matter, you simply risk a lower score. |

My experience has been that the voters are in fact pretty picky about the challenge topic, but they tend to be slightly more gracious as the wow factor of the photo goes up.
And welcome to the dpc family, by the way. Not very opinionated is always a breath of fresh air around here, tee hee.... I don't know if you've checked out  Roz's work, but you would find a kindred spirit in your insect macro passion... as well as an amazing, sweet spirit. Good luck!
