After a few months with my Olympus PEN E-PL1 I find I'm using my Canon 7D less and less and I'm seriously considering buying the OM-D EM5.
There are a couple of things I'm not sure of:
1. Is there likely to be a newer model soon? I'd hate to pay the price for the camera and then hear that there's a newer model coming soon and the price is about to drop. A couple of weeks ago the salesman at my favorite camera shop told me to wait for a price drop, but since then our currency has suffered a sharp drop in value, making me doubt that this is the best advice. Today he had changed his tune somewhat and said I should either buy current stock or wait until next year.
2. As I already have the 14-42mm kit lens that came with the E-PL1, is it worth buying the new 12-50mm lens that comes with the OM-D EM5? I've heard it's a very good lens, but I'm unsure whether it's worth the extra expense or whether I should save the money for something else.

Me on the other hand I gave up on 4/3 and went full frame with Canon 6D and been very happy.
I did handle the OMD EM5 and the kit lens is very different then the EPL1. Smooth, quiet and faster (focus) and allegedly better for video and a bit sharper. Is also metal and weather sealed. Has a better reach on both ends. So if I was to buy it it would be with the kit lens!

Thanks Tiberius. I don't think I'm going to give up on Canon altogether but I'm very small and find it difficult to carry the 7D around all the time. At most I ever carry one spare lens and rarely even that, which means that I often find I don't have the lens I want with me. With micro 4/3 I don't have that problem.
What you say about the lens does confirm what I've been led to believe.

I don't think a new OMD is coming out any time soon. They just came out with a PEN upgrade and I think they are working on something for the native 4/3 owners - but I don't know if it will be an E-5 upgrade or a OMD that can handle the 4/3 lenses.
If you go with the OMD, you need to get the 45mm lens. It is totally amazing. |

LevT bought one recently and he seems to be doing pretty well with it!

can't answer either of your questions, Gina, but FWIW I bought this same camera a month or so ago (very happy) with a 14-150mm lens, and I find it to be a pretty solid performer, fast and accurate focusing, reasonably sharp, not too much distortion. A bit slow for low light and shallow DOF applications, but the lenses you are considering are quite slow as well. Augment it with a couple of fast primes (I got the 45mm, and am thinking about getting 12mm and/or 17mm as well) and most of the situations would be pretty much covered. |

Those fast primes sound great and are something I may consider later.
I just bought a 40-150mm to use alongside my 14-42mm so that I've got most options covered without carrying much around. The 14-150mm was more than I was prepared to spend for a lens right now. I was also scared of another all-purpose lens as I've never been happy with the sharpness of my Sigma 18-200mm (for Canon). I'm actually considering trading in that lens if I buy the OM-D, though it will leave a big gap in what my Canon can do.
Buying Olympus in South Africa isn't easy as most of the shops don't keep it, and getting the lenses I want can be tricky too.

I don't think that means much. He's just a good photographer, whatever camera he uses.
