Secure your person to something that is not likely to blow away ;-)

Standing on the beach in hurricane-force winds, with debris and water flying all around, you will probably not be the best thing for your camera...wrap it in saran wrap or something so as not to get it wet. ;o)

Suggestion 1 would be don't. :) You can be very seriously injured by flying debris. Even things that look harmless like palm fronds. Your camera could also be turned into a projectile. There's a reason you don't see many still shots during a hurricane. It's beyond a non-safe thing to do. :)

Suggestion 2: Shoot during the build up and aftereffect. Use this as a chance to work on some photojournalism skills. Get shots of people bording up windows, maybe surfing in the high waves. If you go out after the storm, watch for downed powerlines. Assume any downed wires are live, and watch for water near powerlines.

Suggestion 3: Don't go outside once winds top 35 mph sustained. The damage to your camera or you will not be good. :)

Suggestion 4: submit any interesting shots to //photo.weather.com/interact/photogallery/82/3920/index.html since the Weather Channel doesn't appear to have any good weather shots for hurricane season yet.

Last but not least- be careful. We don't want to see you as a statistic.

:)

There may not BE a school after Saturday.

Best bet for hurricane photos is to use gear designed for the task. I don't know if B&H carries specially modified Lockheed C-130 cargo planes, but they seem to be all the rage with the pros. Start saving your lunch money.

Rent a expensive executive aircraft like the global express, it can fly over 51,000 feet! You should get some amazing shots from way up there and no worries of turbulence you yould be able to fly well over the storm!
;-)

Bring a blower in case you get dust on the lens.
