As a Westie owner I'm more a small dog lover, but this young lady is adorable. Congratulations on your choice and I wish you lots of good years to come!

Yes, but clearly the newscaster's dog has an important story to investigate, and the photo-shoot is only causing a delay. :-D

Good luck with the beer fetching. Then she needs to learn to open them, without spilling. That might take a few more weeks ;-)

And not to drink them! ;-). Lovely pup and cross but please take her to training and socialise her!

Definitely. We are going to work on the training, and also training ourselves and our children to understand 'dog'. Many people in our neighborhood have dogs, and it's encouraging to see how many of them heel and haven't been left to take the role of pack leader. Cesar Milan must have an influence in our area. The other folks with dogs are happy to see a newbie and chat, so we're lucky to be in a nice neihgbourhood. No doubt my wife will be visiting the dog park with a couple of her friends who already meet up there.

You did well, Slippy. The Shepherd is strong in this one.

That looks exactly like my neighbors puppy they rescued from a shelter. They knew it was Shepard and something.

No trips to the dog park for mom or dog until Yuuki has had all her shots. A puppy with parvo is not a fun thing, and your wife can bring it home on her shoes.

But, yeah...awesome puppy.

Beyond cute. But you got a red-flag issue to deal with PRONTO: bedding-chewing is a pernicious habit that can lead to the death of all manner of upholstered objects.

Cute video. Did you rig up a little sling to shoot six inches off the ground white moving?

I'm thinking he's lying on his stomach on something the wife or daughter's pulling...

Yeah, but it was so cute I had to get it on video! My wife and daughter are going to PetSmart to get a chewy plush toy, if safe things like that exist, as well as some other stuff. We already have a variety of chew toys in different materials, but didn't get any in fabric. Maybe they don't make fabric toys because that is too similar to furniture, and is a bad idea? She is already very good about not chewing on our hands, as we've been redirecting that to toys.

I wish. :-D
I was running, hunched over and holding the camera low, so the video is a little bumpy, but the wide angle helps reduce the effect.

It IS a bad idea, yes... There ARE some, but as far as I'm concerned that's bad conditioning. If it's soft and fabric, it shouldn't be chewed on.

Yep, I had a lab/mix eat a whole couch while I was at work once.

I dunno...our yellow lab puppy never chewed on anything EXCEPT her toys, and she's always had a terry bone and a terry blankie. She's 12 years old now, never destroyed anything. She does seem to need to have one of those soft toys in her mouth when she comes to do the door...I guess that's so she doesn't bite us ;)

I think you just have to train them in any case. But I think labs like to hold soft things in their mouths...and chewing a toy is way better than chewing a couch.

I've read that destructive behaviour while you're away could be due to the frustration of not being able to control her pack of humans. This happens when the dog has taken lead of the pack because the humans have failed to make it clear who is in charge. Also, without enough physical and mental exercise, problems like that happen.

Our older dog who may be a lab/pyr/shepherd or lab/golden/shepherd mix seems to need to have a "ticket" to go outside or come back in the house. He has a basket of toys inside by the door and one outside by the door and he "trades". He doesn't like to cross the threshhold without something in his mouth. If the basket happens to be empty, anything becomes fair game. He prefers soft things, so socks are his preference to take outside, although he has occasionally used some creative items as tickets (like pieces of mail or even my car keys). I wonder if it's a lab thing. He doesn't bite and he's not destructive. The only thing he has ever chewed was one of my lambswool slippers when he was a small puppy.

To be fair to my previous dog, we were all gone a lot. This happened right after we got him, when he was about 4 months old. We did finally break him of the chewing, got him all calmed down, etc. then he got stolen by a neighbor who moved. His kids were always stealing him, and he'd knock at my door and tell me to come to his house and ask for the dog so his kids didn't know he told me. When they moved the dog disappeared.
