I just looked through the Fairy Tale challenge and my father had used my computer and set my screen resolution to 800x600. It was so infuriating to look at the images that I immediately resized it, but still not quite all the way up since I didn't remember what setting I had it at. The new setting was perfect for shots in landscape orientation but those in portrait orientation didn't quite make it fully on the screen. When I made my resolution even bigger (how I normally have it, 1280x1024) I was able to see them all in their entirely without scrolling around. It makes such a huge difference seeing the photo this way, as it is meant to be seen. I was wondering if everyone does this. I realize that some people may have less than perfect vision so they may prefer to see the images larger but I believe that whatever is gained by increasing the size is more than lost by not seeing the entire image. Is there a way the site could be set up to perhaps match each photos dimensions to everyone's screen size?

Yeah, I've been through that. Up until last week I was always on an 800x600 and now I'm on a 1024x768 (or whatever) and it's nice to be able to see more of the images. When I was on the 800x600 I made sure I always checked my images to make sure that they looked good on my screen. And that partially included making sure that the first section of my image had an impact (because that was what was seen first), now whether or not I suceeded is up to you. ^_^

Anyway, I knind of agree, but also kind of not because it's possible that that will mess up the way that the photographer intends it to be seen at.

What photographer would want their images to be seen that way?

No no, not like that, but I mean, to get it to fit all screen resolutions, they might have to make the code automatically resize the images which could affect the photo.

True, but they could keep it in scale.

oh, no, I know that, but like when IE automatically resizes images to fit your browser window, they get pixelated and are well...different than the way they're meant to be. That's what I'm basing my opinion off of, I'm not sure there's a way out there to do it honestly without that problem. Also, I'd assume that the admin's chose 640 as a maximum because it is the best overall size to use for all screen resolutions.

I suppose you're right. The administrators have done and continue to do a great job with this site. If there was a way to do it I bet it would have been done.
