... folks thought this shot didn't have anything to do with Botany?

I'm not disappointed or anything with my placing, as I love my shot, but just wanting to understand how my shot might have been off.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

Because the subject of the photo is not 'botany'?

Yep, that's what folks said, but how is it not. It's got a leaf in it, does that not fall under the cat. as the ribbon winning shots of flowers did?

Uh ... it's got a leaf in it, supporting a drop which refracts the image of an entire tree.

The challenge (to me) was not to make an illustration for a botany textbook, but to take a photo using a plant as a major compositional element.

Everyone should know by now that you have to slap a voter across the face with a challenge topic. If you give them leeway to decide for themselves, where is their incentive to side with your idea when they, in fact, are your competitors?

Thanks General & John. It's very interesting... so, if I had included the whole plant I would have met the challenge better, eh?

Good stuff to remember for the future. Thanks!

any other thoughts out there?

Looks like you had only a couple of commentors that seemed to feel that you did not meet the challenge, and you got some valuable specific feedback about how the shot could have been better. You got a pretty decent score to boot, so I'd say you did well.

To me the main subject looks like the water droplet which just so happens to be on a partly blurred leaf. Then again, I'm not a stickler for specific criteria-meeting challenge pics.

I've made this comment in lots of threads about shots "meeting the challenge" or not, and here it goes again.

Not botany? It's a plant! There is water on the plant, and the water reflects....A Tree! For those of you who don't think this is botany, wake up! It's a plant! What do you want?!?!

Well, I've said it again, and it will once again not be heard by those who need to hear it.

Hey Rooster.
The image just doen't say "botany" to me. It says "water" or "balance" or "macro" or "reflections" not "the study of plant life"
Sorry, it still doen't say "botany" to me. I also wrote that I loved the shot, and I do, and I scored it a 7.

Thanks everyone!
I was & still ma very happy with my shot & it placed rather well considering, so no malcontent here, I promise.

What I was trying to ascertain was whether some scored it low bc some thought it did not fit the botany theme. I was just curious as to why this was, don;t want to argue or anything but was wondering.

Steve, you made a good point about the reflection, even tho it's crazy tiny & prolly easily over looked by many.

Thanks again everyone!
