Easter egg hunt yesterday. "Things In A Row", "Sugar II" and some family photos today, and a lot of other crap over the last week.

I must say, I'm loving my new camera.

I jumped from a D70. That's like... 7030 more D's, or whatever. 18 extra megapixels...

I think the biggest shock to the system is the size of the screen.

Why, oh why did I wait this long to upgrade?!?

There's a Romanian photog showing some beautiful test photos here

Edit to say congrats!!!

I JUST RECIEVED MINE TOO!!! iT'S A big STEP UP FOR ME. Lots to learn. What do you think of the 51 focus points? Really would like to know what your thoughts are as you continue to "play" with your new toy!

Congrats! I got mine on Friday.

I've been running tests against the D600...not completely scientific, controlled tests...and I have been careful not to take many photos since I'm still considering whether it's a keeper. But so far, it's pretty close in my tests, if not better at the same ISO. I may post some soon.

I've heard conflicting reports whether this is the same sensor as the D5200. Some said yes, some said no. But if you tell LR it's a D5200, by fixing the metadata like this using exiftool:

exiftool -model="Nikon D5200" -ext nef *.nef

Then LR 4.3 reads those NEFs just fine (whereas it can't otherwise).

Well hello there!! Looks like I'm not alone! I bought mine last night and got it pretty darn cheap. Around 1450 SGD (please do the math yourself)for the body.

my only concern with my previous D80 was poor low light performance. I have been absolutely BLOWN AWAY by the 7100's ISO performance. At least for what I shot yesterday. I get grains, visible ones, only at ISO 6400. Loving it!!

Oh and the less buffer compared to the 7000 isn't much of an issue for me. And 7 is a commendable number as well. Nothing to complain about.

just a quick question, has anyone of you processed the raw yet? I read online that LR cannot do it and you have to mess up the exif to make it look like a D5200 and only then can you process. Are you guys doing the same?

Yes, see my post below...you need exiftool and then the command line below.

Well..was excited to express my feelings :P Didn't read your post.

So we need that workaround eh. Hope a fix comes along soon.

Shane...I took the liberty of renaming your thread...just because it can now be more easily used as a general discussion for all us new D7100 users. At least the title will cue people in to look and join in now. I hope you don't mind.

Rename's fine by me...

As for LR not reading the .nef's, I'm sure the update will be out soon enough for me... In the mean time, I've got ViewNX and the latest PaintShop Pro if I need to convert RAW.

I just need more time in the day to play more...

Anyone notice that this camera seems to have very good latitude for overexposure? Haven't tested it formally yet, but in my other test shots, I was exposing for a brick building and pretty much blew out the cloudy sky behind...it all came back when I dropped the exposure 2.7 or so stops (just to see). I think that's more than afforded by my other SLRs...but I'll have to test that.

It certainly would remove any potential penalties from errors when exposing to the right!

I had a few errors with my older Tamron 70-300 lens while taking shots of the Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday.

Kept getting a "fEE" error. Seemed to happen more often at the extremes of the zoom. I could adjust the zoom, then refocus and it would work.

Anyone else had any similar issues?

I was just doing a focus test in low light and I notice that my autofocus illuminator isn't going on in the D7100!

The setting says on. Is there something else (some other setting) that might affect that?

Never mind--I see that my focus point wasn't the center area and it only works there. (I assume it has to do with aim!)

Question: Did your D7100's come without the usual Nikon plastic screen protector? Mine seems to not have one! Just the soft temporary wrap/protector.

(I have only been doing little tests on mine, and since I already have a compatible battery and charger, I just left everything unused in the box in case I needed to return it...so I just dug through the box, having decided to keep it, and NADA!)

I looked at the What's in the box, on B&H website for the D7100, it did not list a LCD cover for it :(

Neil - care to give a blow-by-blow account of the 7100 vs 600? I am interested in your opinions. (And anyone else that may wish to chime in.)

It does not have one in the box. I think you can get one, but I find them annoying anyway...

I always use them or lately I've been using the GCS (or GGS I think) thin glass self-sticking protector (these are very nice and cheap on Amazon too).

If you never use these, what's been your experience on the scratch resistance of the glass on the LCD? (Not necessarily for the 7100, which is new, but on your other cameras?) How much do you "baby it" as a result?

It's pretty much on par with the D600. My tests show that as a cropped sensor, it gathers less light, so you can't shoot the same scene at the same settings. I also think it's one-stop noisier than the D600, but it's pretty close.

I like it better than the D600 in terms of size and handling, and of course, the lenses are smaller if you use DX lenses, which is a plus to me.

The focus system seems better...extends away from the center more, has more focus points, and more cross type focus points. Both focus very fast.

The 1.3x crop, giving you a 2x crop factor, would be good for sports and focus tracking because the focus points extend across almost the entire cropped frame. But I am mostly a half-press and recompose guy anyway, so that wasn't the attraction.

The lack of a low pass filter was the CLICK that made me buy it in addition to getting to use my smaller lenses. So far, I don't see much difference with my DX lenses. I am doing some tests like that and will put up some shots when I get a chance (though it might not be until I return from vacation).

ETA: This article has a really good comparison of the two cameras in the context of a review of the D7100: //betterfamilyphotos.blogspot.com/2013/03/nikon-d7100-hands-on-real-world-review.html

I'm not new-born-baby careful, but I'm not all that rough. I only ever put it on the D70 when I was putting it in the bag. Always took it off when I was shooting...

*drooing* I am so overdue for an upgrade to a Nikon that has killer low-ISO and noise performance and it sounds like this would suit me fine. Hope bf won the $55million CDN$ lottery!!!

I also got a new D7100 in the last week. Some new things, but so far the "using it without the manual" test is going well. Apparently focus point selection has been buried in menus a bit. Other than that, a great new Nikon. The focus is amazing. In many situations the full 51 point focus array will work well. The focus sensitivity is amazing as well. It will almost focus in the dark! Tracking works, just check out the ambulance in my portfolio. It was captured traveling over 60mph with my old 180mm F2.8 Nikkor. It's been over 5 years since I've purchased a new camera. This one looks like a keeper.

Erastus: You can change focus points w/o the menu. I didn't notice w/o reading, but the center of the AF/M switch on the side of the lens mount is a button. Push it and turn the dials. There's 3 modes where you can manually select focus points from various numbers of options

I didn't want to start a new thread.
I just saw that Apple/Aperture has RAW support for the D7100 in the latest update...
Tempted to upgrade, but I haven't even maximized the use of my current toys... :(
Carry on.

I did some recent autofocus self portrait shots with the 50mm 1.8 on the D7100. I cut myself on the image it was so sharp. I am also impressed with the autofocus.

However, I then repeated the test as closely as possible with the D600. It also was razor sharp. So nothing to complain about in either case (and the 50mm 1.8D is a more amazing lens than I ever realized).

But I've still yet to see a real difference without the LP filter. But again, I'm not complaining!
