Ooh what a gorgeous day out, I can't wait, should be a good yield today. Went outside to check the trees and fix the tubing as a couple lengths looked like they might be at risk of pulling out of the sap buckets.

Got a weird look from the neighbour as I was doing so...what, he's never seen a woman in a bright red housecoat and wellies scampering merrily from tree to tree, checking buckets and giving them a few words and little pats of encouragement before?!

Some people...*eyeroll* ;-)

Best be careful... I hear that there is this lanky red wolf lurking around there... and you know what happened to the last woman red who encountered a wolf in the woods...Eh?

Well my sap run is sucking at the moment due to weather, but I have posted more pics in the Maple Gallery if anyone is interested. Linky is somewhere on this page.

The pictures were interesting. This thread is educational. However, I was slightly disappointed that I could not find a single picture of a woman in a bright red housecoat and wellies scampering merrily from tree to tree. Actually, that might need video.

Very educational! Lucky you getting free syrup. Nothing beats the real stuff.

So very true, but not quite free...pails, spiles and lids = approx $13 CDN ea, x 18 = $234...30 ft tubing + tubing spiles, approx $45...*usually* don't have to add to my $675 annual firewood bill but this year may be an exception if it runs til mid-late April...4in deep hotel pan, $35...assorted strainers, filters and jars...another $50 easy...luckily I pretty much have all the equipment now. I won't bother adding in the cost of collecting sap, monitoring the boiling and cost of hydro cause usually I only finish on the electric stove if need be.

So shouldn't have to spend much more than the $1040 or so I've already spent!

BTW no pics of batch #3 up yet, quite small, just under 500ml but has an unusual vanilla /marshmallow taste to it. Weird season.

Say, Susan, is it legal to mail a jar of syrup? Like, to California? And if it is, how much should I send to you to get a jar?? :-)

According to This it would seem to be legal.

I've had no problem mailing jars to New Jersey, Missouri and Arizona, and I think I sent a jar to LA not too long ago. The only problem is supply. Right now that is really sucking the hind tit. Essentially what you see in that pic showing batches 1-3 this year are all I have - 1 l and a bit.

Now the conditions *should* improve vastly, starting this weekend, and this freakish run may well continue til mid April. There's just no way of knowing.

So if you can be patient a little while longer, Deb, I can get back to you...and if you have a culinary goodie or regional specialty of equal value we can swap.

I will be patient! I don't know what the LA equivalent would be.... a jar of sand? Ha! Can't send fresh fruit... Maybe a celebrity? We have a lot of those, apparently.... I'll think on it a bit. If there's something you know of from down this way, let me know.

Hmm it could be a kind of super-great spice rub or something, or almost anything edible, I'm omnivorous :-)

Dates, olives ... you might be able to mail citrus fruits. I think the Sees Chocolate factory is on La Cienega ...

If I were getting food from LA, I'd ask for a Double-Double, animal style, from In-N-Out. I dunno how that would ship though.
03/19/2013 06:43:00 PM · #118
Ok I know what a double-double is, but animal style?...please tell! ;-)

OOH Paul just mentioned chokklit...that might tempt me enough...:-)

Sounds like a bargain to me!! And fortunately today the trees started to give again, albeit in minute quantities. This weekend SHOULD be the start of a good long more typical spring run than this crazy weather we've been having. Will keep you posted.

Sounds good to me, Susan. And I tell you what - syrup or no, you'll still get chocolate. Just let me know what you DON'T like, since you get to play mix and match at Sees... I can make up a box of whatever you might like!

"Animal Style" is part off In-N-Out's "secret" menu. The patties get cooked with mustard and then additional pickles, cheese, spread and grilled onions are diced up and mixed together on the grill before getting dumped on your burger. It's pure awesome.

And here I was thinking a double double was a coffee - 2 sugar, 2 cream!
