Well so far a fellow member on MT who does make birch beer and birch syrup, thinks it's a very big very old white birch...I dunno...I have pics of the bark in the Maple Gallery now.

Yeah the trunk looks completely wrong, but the limbs have the familiar papery bark. Has almost a metallic gold sheen. Should get some pics of fallen limbs to show. Definitely a softwood.

I don't think it's a birch, the bark is all wrong.

Hey are there any arborists here? I have a freaky tree which I *think* is a birch, but it looks like it wants to be a maple - it's got a huge trunk and gnarly limbs going off in all directions.

*bump for overseas peeps*
04/20/2013 12:53:11 PM · #10
Hey all, especially those overseas wanting a taste. Sadly there are too many strictures in place to prohibit the international travel of syrup from Chateau Snaffles to you, but happily I found this article

Maple syrup overseas

Now you may have to go to the nearest international airport or a high-end gourmet food store, but it's either that or go raid the local Canadian Consulate/Embassy and see if anyone will let you taste some!

BTW beware of feeble cheap imitations which you may see in grocery stores. Anything labelled 'pancake syrup', 'waffle syrup' 'table syrup' 'maple-flavoured syrup' etc is NOT maple syrup. They might contain a teeny tiny trace amount of the real stuff, like 2%-5%, but no more. And the taste of these faux products is sickeningly, grotesquely sweet. Real maple syrup has very complex flavours. Yes of course there is sweetness, but so much more. Very hard to describe. And yes maple syrup is costly but very well worth it.

So if the label lists any ingredient other than maple syrup, pass it by. Your tastebuds will thank you!!!

Well, none of my fellow foodies is sending me fresh produce, which wouldn't last anyway in transit.

Ah, we have the same restrictions (and "agricultural inspections stations") entering California from neighboring states, for the same reasons.

And hey, if they are indeed so picky, why is it I can go to Price Chopper and load up on all manner of foodstuffs identical in basic nature to what's being sent me, and have no problem? Makes no sense at all.

Because the foodstuffs sold at the retail outlet have had import duty fees paid.

You won't have any problem with processed food like jams and preserves. It is the fresh fruits and veggies that are a problem because of bugs and diseases. For example you can bring frozen fries across but don't try to bring a bag of potatos. They can not enter from Canada to the US or vise versa.

You want strange... I will give you strange.

Where I live we have a forestry where they grow trees. A lot of these trees are purchased by stores such as Lowes in upper state NY.

Guess what, I can't bring these Canadian grown trees back with me to Canada... makes one wonder if they check goose droppings to make certain that they don't drop seeds that originate in the USA.

Weird or what?

OK all check the linky Customs Canada Foodstuffs. Frankly most of what I am getting should not pose a problem.

IMHO sending to Canada sounds best, dried chilies don't weigh much so should be little extra expense, if any. FWIW I've had no problems receiving stuff at home. Off to check Customs website.

I'm honestly a bit concerned, and don't know where to send a bag of dried chilis. Since they are an agricultural product, I'm guessing I might want to not send them through to Canada?

Well, Bear's sending preserves, as are most of the others. I haven't checked out the customs site yet but will do. Yayy, Bear goodies! Can't wait...and bubblewrap is always good, as is newspaper of course. Is it being shipped to Canuckistan or UPS Ogdensburg?

I have no idea what is being shipped, but I would strongly recommend that you have it shipped to the UPS Store in Ogdensburg, NY. It will be much quicker and cheaper.

If you know when it will be there, maybe Uncle Raymee can pick it up for you too. :O)

Ray

Yeah....and I bet Uncle Raymee will be glad to taste-test it to ensure that it's safe to eat, right? ;-)

Hmmmmmmm if it involves food, you might want to check with the Customs folks as they are right picky with that. Might be wiser to eat whatever it is on the USA side of the border... and yes I am quite willing to volunteer to do just that.

I have after all had the great pleasure of enjoying the culinary skills of our dear friend Bear_Music. :O)

@ frisca...Mmmm Indian candy...I'm bribable ;-) and more importantly, haven't heard back from a couple other people, so PM me...and as of now the pipeline is closed for another year.

@ Enlightened...oh yes, there will be syrup at the Ottawa Lost gtg!!

Oh and fwiw...today in a grocery store I saw syrup produced by KCAT (local University of Guelph campus) 500ml going for $15.99 and 1l going for $30. Wow, and this is LOCAL!! Holy liftin!
